Sedute al buio della sala hanno imitato le loro eroine e si sono riconosciute in loro. Sono state dive irraggiungibili e insieme personificazioni di tipi sociali, come per esempio la New Woman degli anni '20, con la sua relazione inedita con il lavoro, il tempo libero, il sesso. Il libro interpreta le immagini di dive come Clara Bow, Barbara Stanwyck e Joan Crawford sino a Sophia Loren, Jane Fonda e Angelina Jolie. Ma ripercorre anche l'opera delle registe: partendo dal cinema muto, attraversa i classici hollywoodiani, le nouvelles vagues europee, il cinema d'avanguardia femminista, la narrazione sperimentale degli anni '70 e '80, sino al cinema indipendente degli ultimi vent'anni.

Dopo più di settant'anni di didattica nell'ambito della drammaturgia musicale e di impegno professionale con ruoli decisivi al servizio del Teatro alla Scala, Quirino Principe vuole condividere con chi non tema di leggerlo una sua antica certezza, oggi ingigantita e travolgente: che musica da un lato, teatro dall'altro, siano due realtà miracolose che l'Occidente ha saputo conquistare per sé, al confronto con altre nobili e valorose ma diverse culture. Un prodigio della Natura, nato da energia cosmica, e un prodigio della Storia, ispirato da virtù la cui radice prima è nella forma simbolica di civiltà in cui l'Occidente deve riconoscersi, se vuole esistere. Sarebbe massima ragione di felicità, per l'autore, convincere il lettore che se perdiamo il Teatro d'Opera, se lasciamo che ci sfugga dalle mani, siamo perduti. Sì, certo, questo libro è anche un'arringa, un atto di accusa. Ma per svilupparlo, per sollevare il lettore al giusto grado d'indignazione e alla giusta temperatura dell'ira non più repressa, l'autore suggerisce anche qualche ascensione ad alta quota, di quelle che avvicinano alle costellazioni.

Cosa accadrebbe se una extraterrestre, un'abitante del pianeta Venere, arrivasse in Italia e scoprisse che sulle questioni di genere il nostro non è un paese così evoluto come vorrebbe far credere? Meglio spiegarglielo prima. Con una lettera che è come una guida turistica ai luoghi comuni sessisti nei quali (inevitabilmente?) si imbatterà. "Ciascuno di noi - spiega l'autrice - quando cede ai luoghi comuni, quando ragiona per stereotipi, oppure quando fa finta di niente, porta il suo mattoncino alla costruzione delle discriminazioni. Il caso del sessismo lo dimostra. È la prima e la più importante delle polarità che contrappongono gli esseri umani collocandoli in una gerarchia fasulla, costruita perché la differenza si trasformi in disvalore". L'auspicio è che una volta letto questo libro, dizionario dei luoghi comuni del ventunesimo secolo, "non si dovrebbe avere più il coraggio di parlare - come scriveva Flaubert -, per paura di dire, senza rendersene conto, una delle frasi in esso contenute".
