Reliure de l'époque plein veau, dos à 5 nerfs orné de caissons, filets, frises, fleurons, et titre, frappés à l'or fin. Tranches rouges. Bel exemplaire, épidermures et légers frottements sur les mors, intérieur convenable avec quelques très rares rousseurs. Seconde édition originale et la dernière donnée par l'auteur. Elle est si profondément remaniée que c'est presque une ouvre nouvelle. Cette seconde édit., dans l'histoire du texte de V., tient la place de la 5e dans l'histoire des Maximes de La Rochefoucauld ou de la 9e dans celle des Caractères de La Bruyère. C'est, plus encore que la première, l'édition essentielle. Elle contient 330 réflexions et maximes suivi de Méditation sur la foi (12 pp), les Maximes conservées ont changé d'ordre, et les additions sont considérables. Premier ouvrage de Vauvenargues et le seul qu'il ait achevé avant sa fin prématuré à l'âge de 32 ans. Comprenant 46 chapitres consacrés à la nature et aux qualités de l'esprit, et divisé en trois parties : I. Les qualités, avec des réflexions fondées sur l'expérience. II. Les passions, inspirées de Locke. III. La grandeur de l'âme, le courage, le bon et le beau. Son ami Voltaire disait ne pas de connaître de livre plus capable de former une âme bien née et digne d'être instruite. Sainte-Beuve en admirait la netteté qui est l'ornement de la justesse et comparait auteur à Xénophon et à Périclès. L'auteur (1715-1747) publia la 1ère édition sous le voile de l'anonymat. Voltaire, qui n'avait jamais douté de son talent, incita Vauvenargues à reprendre son ouvrage pour rendre le livre excellent d'un bout à l'autre en vue d'une seconde édition. Cette édition, est plus fidèle aux idées du moraliste, et aussi, plus rare. Bon
