WASHINGTON STATE SPOKANE BIRD'S EYE VIEW Pickett JT. artist. J. T.
Spokane Falls Washington Territory. The Great Inland City of the Pacific Northwest. Supplement to the Morning Oregonian.
Portland OR.: The Morning Oregonian. . Newspaper supplement 19 x 24 inches originally folded into quarters with engraved black and white view of Spokane Falls measuring 16 1/2 x 22 inches mounted many years ago on thick stiff board 21 1/4 x 25 3/4 inches. A considerable amount of creasing and tearing occurred before mounting including several tears entering image area including a particularly noticeable curved tear and less than satisfactory re-alignment at the centre of the left edge. Margins of sheet chipped in several spots not entering image area. Foxing to board itself. Sold with all faults. The piece shows its age but the view of the city remains appealing evoking a time when even utilitarian industrial works had a certain minimum standard of attractiveness. Information given at lower left draws attention to the sudden boom in the city's population: 100 people in 1880; 15000 people eight years later. Spokane Falls is "The Center of a vast Agricultural Lumbering and Gold and Silver Mining Region." It is also "The Manufacturing Center of Washington Territory and Idaho possessing the greatest Natural Water Power in America." The piece was published as a supplement to the Morning Oregonian as part of a Spokane Falls W.T. Special Edition Illustrated. Many people were involved in the production: "Sketched from a painting in the office of H. Bolster by J.T. Pickett"; From the Press of A. Anderson & Co. Job Printers and Lithographers 2 to 8 Alder St. Portland Or."; the engraving was made by the Moss Co. in New York and published in the Portland-based newspaper The Morning Oregonian. Despite the condition issues it is an impressive and uncommon piece of documentation of the expansion of the area at the end of the nineteenth century. . The Morning Oregonian. unknown

WASHINGTON SPOKANE BIRD'S EYE VIEW
Spokane Washington.
Spokane WA.: John W. Graham & Co. 1905. Color wall map chromolithograph bird's eye view sheet size 41 1/2 x 61 inches mounted on linen and attached to wood rods at upper and lower edge. Light toning associated with aging of original protective lacquer coating. Overall very good bright and clean condition. A visually stunning and detailed bird's eye view of the Spokane area published by J.W. Graham & Co. a paper and stationery supply store. In 1898 the main commercial area of Spokane had suffered a devastating fire; along with loss of life there had been hundreds of thousands of dollars of property damage to Spokane including the total loss of the Graham store then located in the Great Eastern block built in 1890 at a cost of $250000. A mere 7 years later J.W. Graham & Co. trumpeted the resurgence of the Inland Empire and their business in this huge bird's eye view image. The legend along the lower edge identifies 74 sites including two J.W. Graham locations one of which is a warehouse; there is an inset at the upper left edge of the military post Fort Wright. . WASHINGTON STATE SPOKANE BIRD'S EYE VIEW
The City of Spokane Falls and Its Tributary Resources Issued by the Northwestern Industrial Exposition Spokane Falls Washington October 1st to November 1st 1890. TOGETHER WITH BIRD'S EYE VIEW: Spokane Falls and Her Natural Resources."
Buffalo.: Matthews Northrup & Co. 1890. An oversized souvenir book featuring a large color bird's-eye view of the city measuring 5 3/4 x 12 3/4 inches on sheet on sheet 12 x 18 1/2 inches black and white photo illustrations throughout the book map 56pp folio 19" x 15" pictorial paper wrappers. This copy was misbound missing pages 37/38 & 39/40 with duplicates of pages 45/46 & 47/48. Wrappers are chipped along edges with a few edge tears and small paper loss in a couple of places several small spots at left edge of front cover. Interior generally in good condition: three pages have tearsapprox 2" lower right corner lightly bumped. Bird's-eye view is in very good condition a few very short tears to right edge well outside the image. A sheet with the booster description "A Marvellous Sight Promised" is still attached to the back of the bird's eye view as issued. A magnificent booster publication produced as a souvenir at the time of the Northwestern Industrial Exposition just a year after a fire destroyed a major part of the city. Particularly interesting is the presence of the large color bird's-eye view entitled "Spokane Falls and Her Natural Resources the variety and extent of which are not equalled by any city in the world." This view is loose in the publication evidently intended to be framed. . Matthews, Northrup & Co. unknown
