In 8° (20×13,7 cm); (10), 228, (2) pp. Bella legatura coeva in mezza pergamena maculata con piatti foderati con carta coeva cremisi. Dorso a 5 nervi con titolo e fregi in oro ai tasselli. Piccola mancanza di pelle al margine inferiore del dorso e minime strofinature ai piatti ma nel complesso buon esemplare. All’interno in perfette condizioni di conservazione. Tagli minimamente spruzzati in azzurro. Piccola xilografia al frontespizio. Elegante veste grafica per questa prima edizione stampata da Bettinelli a Padova di questo importante studio epidemiologico del noto medico e professore padovano Giovanni Maria Zecchinelli che fu anche Reale Ispettore Generale delle Terme Euganee a Abano Terme. Dedicatoria a Ferdinando Ernesto Conte di Bissingen. L’opera contiene anche il “Saggio sulla febbre biliosa o gialla della Giamaica raccolto dal manoscritto d’un chirurgo defunto da Carlo Blicke, traduzione dall’inglese del dottor Giovanni Maria Zecchinelli”. L’autore fu una delle personalità più in vista della Padova di inizio ottocento e a lui si deve il grande sviluppo ed ammodernamento dei bagni termali del circondario euganeo. L’opera qui presentata è il debutto letterario di Zecchinelli che poi scrisse numerose altre opere, alcune molto celebri come quelle sulle acque termali ed i loro benefici. Lo scritto è un dotto trattato sulla febbre gialla (detta anche “tifo itteroide”, “vomito nero”, “febbre delle Antille”), una malattia virale di gravità variabile, anche mortale, causata da un virus a singolo filamento positivo di RNA, appartenente alla famiglia Flaviviridae, trasmesso da Culicidae (zanzare) infette. In esso l’autore tratta dell’origine americana della febbre gialla e delle cause climatiche che possono essere favorevoli ad un suo sviluppo. Segue poi ad analizzare i vari sintomi ed i casi riscontrati in Italia (come l’epidemia che colpì Livorno alla fine del settecento), per finire con una lunga descrizione dei rimedi e ricette da utilizzarsi nella sua cura (come la china china, i bagni caldi, l’oppio ecc. L’autore come altri medici del suo tempo arriva perfino ad intuire come le zone salmastre ed umide dei litorali siano più favorevoli alla nascita delle epidemie. Segue in fine al volume, con frontespizio proprio, la prima traduzione italiana di un trattato ricavato da un manoscritto di un medico inglese, Charles Blicke, comparso per la prima volta a stampa a Londra nel 1772 dove si descrive l’epidemia di malaria che colpì la Giamaica. A parte i minimi segni del tempo alla legatura, in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione. Raro debutto letterario. Rif. Bibl.: IT\ICCU\VIAE\004170.
