È questa la scienza dell'epigenetica, che rivela non solo un nuovo modo di concettualizzare il comportamento dei nostri geni ma, cosa più importante, fornisce anche una nuova prospettiva sulla comprensione delle dilaganti problematiche di salute che caratterizzano il moderno mondo occidentale. La ricerca epigenetica svela che le nostre scelte relative al modo di vivere (il cibo che mangiamo, gli integratori che prendiamo, l'esercizio fisico che facciamo e perfino il contenuto emotivo delle nostre esperienze quotidiane) sono elementi coinvolti nell'orchestrazione delle reazioni chimiche che attivano o disattivano parti del nostro genoma, che codificheranno esiti pericolosi per la salute spianando la strada a una patologia, o creeranno un ambiente interno favorevole alla longevità e alla resistenza alle malattie. Siamo dunque conduttori di una sinfonia, co-autori della nostra vita, della nostra salute, del nostro equilibrio.
