‎Cet ouvrage a été écrit en 1809 par un collectif de médecins et de chirurgiens de Tournay, membres du Comité gratuit de Vaccine en faveur des Indigens. (La vaccine, communément appelée « variole de la vache », est une maladie infectieuse des bovidés (cowpox en anglais) et des équidés (horsepox en anglais). Le virus, proche de celui de la variole, a fourni un vaccin contre cette dernière. Le vaccin de la vaccine n'est cependant plus utilisé de nos jours car la variole est éradiquée depuis 1980.Cet ouvrage est écrit en réponse aux positons anti Vaccine prises par M. Hoverlant dans son livre Essai chronologique pour servir à l'histoire de Tournay.Adrien Alexandre Marie Hoverlant de Beauwelaere est né à Tournai le 9 mars 1758 et y est décédé le 8 septembre 1840. Il termine ses études de droit à Louvain en 1782. Il exerce dabord comme avocat mais se lance ensuite dans la politique et occupe plusieurs fonctions publiques. A partir de 1800 il se consacre uniquement à la recherche historique. Son uvre maîtresse est sans conteste « Lessai chronologique pour servir à lhistoire de Tournay » publié de 1805 à 1834 en 114 volumes. Cette histoire de Tournai est un mélange hétéroclite dinformations de toute nature concernant lhistoire de la ville, entrecoupé de tirades vengeresses et coléreuses contre ses ennemis et de cancans divers. Lhistorien actuel peut se référer à ce travail monumental en restant néanmoins très prudent, lexactitude nétant pas le premier souci dHoverlant. Voici ce quécrivait R C de Fortsas (Renier Chalon) un des biographes dHoverlant en 1846 au sujet de lessai chronologique : « Pendant plus de trente ans ce fut de la part de lAretin (écrivain satirique italien du XVIème siècle) tournaisien, un déluge dinjures et de calomnies contre tous ses compatriotes les plus honorables. On ne peut même sexpliquer comment il échappa aux poursuites judiciaires et autres, surtout pour les derniers volumes, quen supposant quon le considérât comme devenu tout à fait fou ». Plus loin le même biographe écrit : « Il sétait mis, pendant les dernières années de sa vie, au régime de Robert dArbrissel, sans toutefois le supporter de même » Nous avons essayé de comprendre le sens cette phrase énigmatique. Robert dArbrissel est le fondateur de labbaye de Fontevraud, il conseillait à ses moines en guise de mortification suprême de dormir entre deux moniales sans succomber à lacte de chair. Le lecteur déduira de lui-même ce que de Fortsas a voulu insinuer Lors de la parution du 66 éme volume de son essai chronologique il navait plus que deux souscripteurs.Est-il besoin de préciser que ces Réflexions critiques sont pour le moins d'actualité, quelle que soit la position que l'on peut avoir en ces jours.‎

Antiche firme di appartenenza settecentesche al frontespizio che identificano l’esemplare come appartenuto al medico e fisico “Laurentino Ciglia”. Frontespizio in rosso e nero con fregio xilografico. Qualche macchiolina di foxing nel margine esterno di alcune pagine, un piccolo antico rinforzo al margine interno della 5 carta, ininfluente. Un leggerissimo alone, quasi impercettibile, nelle ultime 5 carte e nel complesso esemplare in buone condizioni di conservazione. Prima assai rara edizione, stampata a Napoli, di questo importantissimo testo del grande medico originario di Ruvo di Puglia (Bari), Domenico Cotugno. In questa celeberrima opera, Cotugno, 29 anni prima della scoperta di Jenner che cambierà il mondo della medicina, sulla base di dirette e numerosissime osservazioni cerca di analizzare la natura del vaiolo arrivando a considerare le lesioni da esso provocate, solo esterne e non anche viscerali. “Egli sosteneva che la sede fosse la cute esposta all’aria e che vi fosse la necessità di trovare rimedi specifici, rigettando per esempio la cura tradizionale dei bagni caldi. Descrisse la storia di persone di diverse condizioni sociali con il linguaggio oggettivo della scienza ma senza perdere di vista il lato umano dei malati. La parte più importante è il sostegno all’inoculazione che lo avrebbe portato, in seguito, ad appoggiare la vaccinazione jenneriana”. L’opera ebbe grande successo e numerose riedizioni. L’autore, celebre medico, anatomista e chirurgo fu uomo di ampi interessi culturali. Fu anche uno dei medici più celebri e geniali del suo tempo ed operò principalmente a Napoli anche se fu socio di numerosissime accademie estere. “Domenico Cotugno fu protagonista di importanti scoperte neurologiche, grazie a un’intensa attività clinica e anatomica, e fin dall’inizio mostrò i suoi interessi per l’anatomia sottile, cioè la ricerca dei piccoli e nascosti meccanismi che compongono il nostro organismo. In tutte le sue indagini egli seguì il metodo indicato nella sua prima opera: mostrare la natura delle cose così come gli era apparsa non una o due volte, ma centinaia di volte, nell’esame dei cadaveri”. Scrisse su svariati argomenti e fu un fine pensatore. “Secondo Benedetto Croce, Cotugno potrebbe essere stato il vero autore del celebre trattato Delle virtù e dei premi (il secondo del suo genere dopo Dei delitti e delle pene di Cesare Beccaria) che, uscito anonimo nel 1766, fu ristampato l’anno seguente, anche in francese, recando come autore il giurista aquilano Giacinto Dragonetti e a questi sempre attribuito”. Il Garrison-Morton, 1382, scrive che Cotugno “was the first to describe the fluid surrounding the spinal cord and to suggest that it was in continuity with the ventricular and cerebral subarachnoid fluids. However, his concept of the cerebral and spinal fluid, which is the beginning of its modern physiology, remained in obscurity until rediscovery by Magendie some 60 years later”. Rara prima edizione. ‎Polémique entre le Dr Depaul, directeur de la Vaccine et le Dr Guérin [note*], qui « marche pour ainsi dire à tâtons comme un homme qui, n’étant pas bien sûr de lui, se ménage une retraite sur toutes les questions importantes » (pp 1-2) ; les fleurets étant mouchetés, Depaul le qualifie néanmoins de « savant adversaire » (p. 6) tout en réduisant à néant, à grands coups de statistiques et d’observations nombreuses, les prétendus bienfaits de la vaccination humaine. Soixante-dix pages plus loin, le Depaul peut conclure : « Je crois avoir démontré que les objections de mon contradicteur qui reposent souvent sur des erreurs matérielles, ou sur des faits mal observés et surtout mal interprétés, ne sont pas de nature à porter atteinte à la valeur de la vaccination animale ». ‎[note *] Jules René GUÉRIN (Boussu (Belgique), 1801-Hyères, 1886), médecin belge, formé à l’Université de Louvain, Directeur de la « Gazette médicale de Paris », était membre de l’Académie (royale puis impériale) de Médecine, depuis 1842 ; il y restera jusqu’à sa mort. Ce spécialiste en Orthopédie avait « une forte personnalité, originale et peu orthodoxe ». Sa controverse avec le Dr Joseph-François MALGAIGNE (Charmes [Vosges], 1806-Saint-Gratien [Seine-et-Oise], 1865) est restée célèbre » (source : C.T.H.S.), sombre affaire de plaintes réciproques en diffamation au travers de leurs journaux respectifs : la Gazette médicale de Guérin contre la Revue médico-chirurgicale de son adversaire… Enfin, et pour le plaisir, si l’on peut dire, citons le Dr Démétrius ZEMBACO (in « Onanisme avec troubles nerveux », 1882) : le Dr Guérin « affirma qu’il avait guéri des jeunes filles affectées du vice de l’onanisme, lorsque tout traitement avait échoué, en brûlant le clitoris au fer rouge » (p. 267). Emballé, Zambaco précise immédiatement : « De retour à Constantinople, je n’ai pas eu de mal à faire accepter par la famille le conseil du savant académicien »… Au vu des détails narrés plus loin, on constate que l’élève a dépassé le Maître ! Pour clore cette digression : on sait que la masturbation rend sourd. Pas que. Z. (p.272) cite un cas, que lui rapporta un autre confrère parisien, d’une « demoiselle de 27 ans qui [lui] fit la confession de se toucher (…), il arriva progressivement une amaurosie [note a] presque complète » : la masturbation rend aveugle.
