The seven Chronicles of Narnia which were published annually from 1950 to 1956 have already taken their place among the great children's classics. But like the other great books which are enjoyed by all ages the Narnian stories were really written to please the author himself. "I wrote the books I should have liked to read" Lewis has said. "That's always been my reason for writing. People won't write the books I want so I have to do it for myself" and he insists that the proper reason for writing a children's story is "because a children's story is the best art form for something you have to say". Besides his works of literary scholarship Lewis is best known for various books on theology the most famous being The Screwtape Letters - from an old devil to a younger one on the best means of tempting mankind which of course was intended to help his readers to be on their guard against the more cunningly hidden temptations by which we are beset.
