br. Cosa resta dopo la battaglia? Quali domande e quali dubbi aleggiano sui cadaveri nella piana? Talvolta le risposte possono essere anche scomode e compromettenti, fino a trasformarsi in atto d'accusa verso la prosopopea degli eroi e di chi ne esalta acriticamente le scelte. Il ritorno di Beorhtnoth figlio di Beorhthelm, qui riproposto insieme al poema breve che ha ispirato il testo e a un saggio monografico di Tom Shippey, rappresenta un punto cruciale nel percorso letterario di J.R.R. Tolkien. La sua rilettura radicale della celebre battaglia di Maldon combattuta tra Anglosassoni e Vichinghi, e l'epilogo a lui immaginato, ribaltano la prospettiva eroica, aprendo la strada all'elaborazione di quel diverso modello d'eroismo che troverà compimento nel Signore degli anelli.

Se non praticano la magia, gli Hobbit finiscono però sempre in mezzo a feroci vicende magiche, come capita appunto a Bilbo Baggins, eroe quasi a dispetto di questa storia, che il grande "mago bianco" Gandalf coinvolgerà in un'impresa apparentemente disperata: la riconquista del tesoro custodito dal drago Smog. Bilbo incontrerà così ogni sorta di avventure, assieme ai tredici nani suoi compagni e a Gandalf, che appare e scompare, lasciando cadere come per caso le parole degli insegnamenti decisivi. E il ritrovamento, apparentemente casuale, di un anello magico, è il germe della grande saga che Tolkien proseguirà nei tre libri del "Signore degli Anelli" illuminando nel suo durissimo senso un tema segreto de "Lo hobbit": cosa fare dell'Anello del Potere?

ill., br. Pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1937, Lo Hobbit è per i lettori di tutto il mondo il primo capitolo del Signore degli Anelli, uno dei massimi cicli narrativi del XX secolo. Protagonisti della vicenda sono, per l'appunto, gli hobbit, piccoli esseri "dolci come il miele e resistenti come le radici di alberi secolari", che vivono con semplicità e saggezza in un idillico scenario di campagna: la Contea. La placida esistenza degli hobbit viene turbata quando il mago Gandalf e tredici nani si presentano alla porta dell'ignaro Bilbo Baggins e lo trascinano in una pericolosa avventura. Lo scopo è la riconquista di un leggendario tesoro, custodito da Smaug, un grande e temibile drago. Bilbo, riluttante, si imbarca nell'impresa, inconsapevole che lungo il cammino s'imbatterà in una strana creatura di nome Gollum. Questa edizione vede la nuova traduzione della Società Tolkieniana Italiana, e le splendide illustrazioni di Alan Lee.
