This expedition is extremely important for Sharar for success means he will be able to raise the bride price necessary to marry his beloved. The expedition meets with little success however. The gods of this world are angry at Engibil the god of Sharar's people. The gods sense that Engibil's people are slipping out of the old ways. They no longer truly respect and worship the ancient gods: what they are enamored of is technological change and innovation. The gods fear that contact with Sharar's people and the trade goods they make will corrupt their own peoples so trade with Sharar's people is forbidden. Sharar must figure out how to deal with the outraged deities of his world if he is to preserve both the livelihood of his people and his marriage prospects. Turtledove has created another winning fantasy world Thessalonica Baen 1997 is also a great read where some men really can hear the gods speak. Sharar himself is haunted by his grandfather's ghost every bit as cantankerous in death as he was in life. But the ghosts and gods are able to remain in this world only so long as the people believe in and venerate them and Sharar's people appear to be a threat to their very existence. This is a fine read with an ingenious plot and fine pacing and an exotic but engaging setting. The characters are interesting and their motivations understandable if only their names were easier to pronounce and remember!. Recommended wherever fantasy has proven popular.
