Philadelphia: W.B. Saunders Company 1948. Hardcover. Small 4to. Burgundy cloth with gilt spine lettering dust jacket. xv 804pp. Extensive tables and figures. Near fine/very good. Mild jacket edgewear with large chip at head of spine and several other small edge chips. A tight most attractive first edition of this pioneering study -- influential and highly controversial followed five years later by the companion "Sexual Behavior in the Human Female." Notes front jacket panel "Based on surveys made by members of the Staff of Indiana University and supported by the National Research Council with Rockefeller Foundation funds." A quite handsome copy in a quite respectable example of the seldom-present dust jacket. Interestingly although ownership not marked in any way this hails from the library of Edgar G. Hellum 1906-2000 the well-known gay "Bard of Pendarvis" -- resident of historic Mineral Point Wisconsin who in the 1930s began saving early Cornish miner's cabins that were being destroyed and assembling an entire mini-village of them -- now Pendarvis a state historic site.
