Overall a Very Good lot sharp & clear. 11" x 14". Image size: 10-1/4" x 12-7/8". Most oblong format. <br/><br/>Group of nine large-format photographs depicting lumbering activities of the St. Paul & Tacoma Lumbering Company Pacific National Lumber Company and the Simpson Lumber Company. All are captioned in the negative identifying Kinsey as the photographer. Clark Kinsey and his brother Darius 1869-1945 were two of the most important photographers documenting the logging and timber industries of the Pacific Northwest. Kinsey photographed the timber industry in the Pacific Northwest for thirty years from World War I until his retirement in 1945. <br />  <br />The images here record not only the equipment & activity of the logging industry but also of the timber cutters themselves capturing their postures and expressions posed amongst the logs and machinery of their trade. Three of the images are annotated on the verso two with some identifying names of the workmen in the photograph. Images are captioned as follows: <br />  <br />"No. 2. Camp #8. Captioned on verso identifying one man. <br />  <br />The University of Washington has a large collection of Kinsey's negatives and photographs some of which they have digitized. Searching their database shows that the present images from the Simpson Lumber Company were likely taken in the 1930s while the images of the other camps are undated though we postulate they are from the same era which coincides with Kinsey's most productive period. <br /> <br />All-in-all an arresting group of large photographs documenting this important industry in the Pacific Northwest by one of its most noted photographers. Large 4to cloth in two volumes bound in two different colors of cloth with a different photo plate on each front cover. 157pp 162pp. Stunningly illustrated with many many Kinsey photographs of the Pacific Northwest. Many are full page. All are of the highest quality. There is some other illustrative material Vol. Two has one brilliant color plate from the original tinted by Mrs. Kinsey. Volume One: "The Family Album & Other Early Work." Volume Two: "The Magnificent Years". As the introductory material says the Kinseys "spent most of a lifetime in photography" in the logging areas of Washington State beginning about 1900. The photos published here were selected from 4500 surviving glass plates & film. The set includes well-written essays and just enough descriptive text to allow the photos to command most of the attention as they should. An "as new" set and in mint condition in lovely marbled slipcase and with the slightly soiled mailing box. Published without dust jackets.
