With woodcut initials and tailpieces. Front pastedown with armorial bookplate of Johnathan Freeman Milward Dovaston The Nursery Library; front free endpaper with later bookplate of Naomi Wood; title page with ownership signature of John Dovaston dated 1799 see below and a couple of ink marginal notes and corrections in his hand. ESTC T152802. Leather somewhat dried but solid and the contents in excellent condition with just a little toning to paper and a handful of leaves with faint foxing. Quite a nice copy.<br/> <br/> From the library of an 18th century polymath this is an updated English edition of Panciroli's influential but rarely seen comparative study of the ancient world and modern age. Italian jurist law professor and historian Guido Panciroli also Pancirolli 1523-99 was commissioned to write the present work by his patron Emmanuel Philibert Duke of Savoy. The work is organized into two books: in the first the author describes what has been lost from the ancient world. This enormous range of inventions customs animals plants and foods includes everything from specific purple dyes to real cinnamon to Roman highways. The second book records new discoveries obviously unknown to the ancients including the Americas printing sugar clocks and chemistry. Historian Vera Keller writes that this "Janus-faced" production "suggested how human nature could precipitate knowledge's loss but also how shared desires might spur its recovery." Panciroli's book she tells us directly led to the popular lists of "desiderata" or things wanted favored by writers such as Francis Bacon Thomas Hobbes and Jakob Bornitz which provided a "powerful new way to advance knowledge not by suppressing human nature but by drawing upon it." Originally composed in Italian the present work circulated widely in manuscript before its translation into Latin and publication by Heinrich Salmuth in 1599. A partial English translation was released in 1638 but ours is the first in complete form. In addition to the translated text the present edition includes a description of new discoveries since the original publication more than a century earlier and as an appendix to the section on printing a list of all incunabula the editors were able to track. Our copy was owned by John Dovaston 1740-1808 who is perhaps best known for his thriving nursery which supplied vegetative products for a considerable area; but he was much more. The son of a wheelwright who was taught to read by a neighbor Dovaston went on to educate himself in antiquities natural philosophy music languages and mechanics as well as planting. His obituary in "The Gentleman's Magazine" for 1808 offers some insight into why Panciroli's work appealed to him. It notes that his study of antiquities in Britain resulted in "a large collection of MSS" recording "historical observations relating to Shropshire and Welsh borders; on Druidical relicks and Stonehenge tracing many traditional vulgar errors from the remote ages of superstition. In Mechanism he has left a set of philosophical and musical instruments made by his own hands; among which are a large reflecting telescope solar microscope and an organ on a new principle; and an electrical machine on the plan of Dr Franklin." Though never a rich man he became a dedicated collector of books amassing a library of some 5000 volumes. He was a bibliophile who studied the books he collected as can be seen here in the textual corrections in his hand. His house and library passed to his eldest son the poet and naturalist John Freeman Milward Dovaston 1782-1854 an early proponent of observing living birds instead of dead specimens who made important discoveries about their habits and territorial behaviors. We are indebted to John Wells Senior Archivist at Cambridge University Library which holds some of the elder Dovaston's manuscripts for his assistance with the provenance of this item. He asks the Scretary of the RSA to "draw the attention" of members to "to the fact that the Munitions Inventions Department which . was recently constituted by the Minister of Munitions for the purpose of dealing with ideas suggestions and inventions for appliances in connection with the prosecution of warfare on land has been authorised by him to receive projects of this nature ." A panel is considering many ideas and would welcome more "suggestions with regard to simplification and improvements whether in the manufacture or in the materials of existing munitions or indeed in any other regard". The second letter is a response to the Secretary's undertaking "to print the substance of his letter in their Journal this week." 1967-1990 Patents Marketing & Investment Correspondence of Inventions by Nelson J. Waterbury Including a Vitamin A Cigarette Filter and a Combination Incandescent and Solar-Electric Light Bulb with Automatic Switching Device and Charging Means Therefor

Including: 1967 letter from Nicholas Ridgley du Pont regarding Hauni Inc.'s of Germany ability to adapt existing cigarette machines to the Vitamin A cigarette technology proposed by Nelson Waterbury with a copy of the patent design drawing and information from the U.S. Patent Office with patent numbers & standard forms the invention "Smoking article and filter therefor containing Vitamin A" filed Oct. 28 1966 another letter from a proponent and co-investor in the patent 'selling' the idea as something which would introduce Vitamin A into the respiratory tract to help its' function - there was concern with tobacco tainted with 3.4 benzo-pyrene found in smoke with a clipping from a NY Times article on the "Strickman Filter" proposed for use by Pall Mall of Canada - about 10 pages of material all told - an interesting sideline are a few pages of material regarding the development of a Vitamin A tampon concerning which also involved du Pont and which evidently used a similar system for the 'delivery' of Vitamin A; with about 10 pages of 1969 typed correspondence faxes and telegrams regarding an investment scheme with the inventor and the juggling of funds and stocks among interested parties some of whom were not trustworthy; with about 15 pages of 1990 typed agreements fax letters copies of U.S. Patent papers regarding the "Combination incandescent and solar electric light bulb with automatic switching device and charging means therefor" - including a fax from John P. Millhone Dep. Asst. Sec. of the Dept. of Energy writing of his interest in the research citing ".The U.S. Department of Energy sees the development and commercialization of energy efficient technologies in lighting and other areas as critical to the national and world interest." and with an agreement with an investor in the bulb process and other communications; with a couple of personal letters to one of the investors from the inventor and a friend on a trip to Europe attempting to set a up deal for specialty steels in Germany and an unidentified copy of a clipping of an article regarding the invention of a voiceprint credit card devised by Waterbury from an English periodical; light wear to materials in good condition and an interesting group concerning an American inventor's varied work. .
