Die wegen ihrer vorzeitlichen Malereien bekannte Höhle von Altamira in Nordspanien gehört heute zum UNESCO-Welterbe und ist der Öffentlichkeit aus konservatorischen Gründen nur als Replik zugänglich. Nach ihrer zufälligen Entdeckung 1868 galten die Malereien zunächst als "vulgärer Streich eines Schmierers" und wurden erst nach weiteren, ähnlichen Funden in Südfrankreich ab etwa 1900 in ihrer Bedeutung erkannt. Mit einem nach dem Vorwort eingeklebtem Zeitungsausschnitt von 1939, der die zufällige Entdeckung der Höhle schildert, und der Text mit sauberen Unterstreichungen in Bleistift. Der Vorderumschlag mit altem Namenszug, sonst gut erhaltenes Exemplar der frühen deutschen Veröffentlichung mit nur leichten Gebrauchsspuren.
