Two Edwardian silver gelatin photographs of the Motor Launch Augusta on the Willamette River at the beginning of the 20th century flying a United States Ensign flag and 45 Star Union Jack on the front Jack Staff. Two men are shown seated with one piloting and the other seated a little forward towards the bow with the name clearly lettered on the prow.

Two silver gelatin photos sized 6 x 8.25 in. mounted on dark gray studio boards sized 9.75 x 12 in. minor creasing & wear to couple corners edgewear still VG sharp images with strong contrast and pencil annotation on verso of one stating “Willamette†River. These two images document the era of speedy motor gasoline launches on the Willamette River in the Pacific Northwest at the beginning of the 20th century. Although steam yachts were the first recreational power boats their scale and expense restricted them only to the wealthy where as gasoline engine power boating was much more accessible. The Augusta gasoline motor launch depicted in these two photos was designed for speed with significant wake behind the craft setting low in the water clean lines large open area for seating engine and instruments flying flags a bow and stern. n.p., hardcover

First edition of this remarkably scarce report prepared during the depths of World War II to detail the traffic flows needs road structures the loads of existing Columbia River Bridges at Hood River Cascade Locks and Longview together with proposed bridges to be built in order to facilitate economic growth in the Pacific Northwest Home Front. The proposed bridges included those at the Dalles Umatilla and Astoria which were eventually built but also pushed for far more crossings which have been resisted up to the present day. Of particular interest are the photos and descriptions of the types of commercial trucks and buses on the roads the service stations and support facilities for maintaining commerce and more. Free Government Lands Reached by the Burlington Route in Nebraska and Eastern Colorado cover title
Chicago: Poole Bros 1889. Very good. Folding pamphlet with 14 panels approximately 13 x 24 inches unfolded. A few very short separations along folds. Light tanning. Scarce pamphlet promoting lands available along the route of the Burlington and Missouri Railroad and associated lines in Colorado and Nebraska in the late 1880s. According to the text of the publication "Public lands are melting away" and it goes on to describe several counties in Nebraska including Thomas Hooker Grant Sheridan Box Butte and Sioux Counties which can be accessed via the Burlington Route. The areas advertised in Eastern Colorado are described as the "rain belt" of the state where "Irrigation is absolutely unnecessary." The reverse of the pamphlet prints a map of the rail lines west from Omaha and Missouri across Nebraska to Colorado with the areas of available land shaded in pink. A charming souvenir photo album capturing scenes along the Columbia River from The Dalles down to Kalama WA in 1898 as the Lovell family emigrated from Illinois to Bay View and later La Conner WA depicting sternwheelers sailing ships shipwrecks Cape Horn and Astoria in 1898.

Oblong 12mo. 7 x 5.5 in. 12 pp unpaginated. thick gray card stock slotted die-cut windows for inserting photos with 11 original photographs sized 3.25 x 4.25 in. 6 albumen on thin photo paper 5 silver gelatin on matte finish photo paper 1 manuscript Christmas note presenting the album Christmas 1898 a few ever-so-faint pencil manuscript captions below. Pebbled textured black cloth silver lettering stamped on front cover minor edgewear soiling to rear pastedown minor soiling to final image still a VG- exemplar. This souvenir album opens with beautiful sunset shot across the Columbia River followed by a photo of a young woman standing in front of well-appointed home with Hops growing along the porch. These are followed by photos capturing shipping along the Columbia River with the British sailing yacht Samantha out of Liverpool tied up to the Bailey Gatzert sternwheeler; the sternwheeler Kehani which operated from Portland originally launched in 1890 and was rebuilt and renamed Ottawa in 1905; a nice front view of the passenger sternwheeler Regulator built originally in 1891 by Louis Paget for The Dalles Portland & Astoria Naviagation Co. known as the Regulator Line operating steamer service from The Dalles to the Lower Columbia River past Kalama. Other photos depict a stately Victorian hotel on pilings near the shipping channel; a shipwreck of a 3-masted schooner on its’ side buried in the sand; and Cape Horn along the River prior to construction of the rail line. The final photo captures the waterfront of Astoria in 1898 with warehouses and canneries on pilings and houses above on the bluffs. Lovell 1883-1976 moved from Illinois to Washington following the death of his father William Lovell with his mother Susan Lovell and brothers Charles & Harry Lovell who homesteaded near La Conner WA after first settling in Bay View WA in late 1898. The trip must have been prior to July 12 1898 as the Regulator sternwheeler depicted in one of the photos wrecked at the Cascade Locks July 12 1898 was salvaged and rebuilt with a larger and heavier hull launching Feb. 1899. Milwaukie OR: Elvah Reck & Albert Reck 1909-1910. Tall 8vo. 6 x 9 in. 88 pp unpaginated. on blue ruled paper first 26 pp. filled out in two different manuscript hands in ink & pencil first part by Elva remainder by Albert of approx. 4500 words. Limp tan covers cloth backing & stapled at upper fore-edge center crease from folding to insert into backpack Arts & Crafts decorative borders light age toning still a VG exemplar. A concise and informative travel diary written by Elvah Reck and her husband Albert Reck a street car conductor for the PRL&P Co. and enthusiastic semi-professional photographer as they traveled on the ever-expanding railway network in and around Portland Oregon during the Progressive Era. Elvah notes that on the night before the family was to travel up the Columbia River Gorge “Bert came home at 1:16 AM developed negative of Oak Grove base ball boys and made preparations for the morning and retired at 3 AM.†Subsequently Bert and family overslept by an hour and raced to catch the train and managed to board the Baily Gatzert sternwheeler by 7:00 AM. “Bert took a picture of Rooster Rock and two pictures of Cape Horn.†Elvah makes frequent mentions of the beauty of the Columbia River and surroundings and was fascinated by the working of the Cascade Locks. They left the sternwheeler and packing three children their belongings and camera equipment they secured a camping spot. However their daughter Norma climbed on an old stump to get a better view and “put her foot in a yellow-jacket nest and the way she climbed down from there and screamed was enough to bring everyone from the other camps . . . we fought yellow-jackets and ran a half mile to keep up with Norma.†The family does manage to find an abandoned house to camp in manage their breakfast and then hike and travel along the rim into Oneonta Gorge and decided later to return back home “on account of Elvah’s back.â€Reck records one of his many photo shoot excursions when on April 3 1910 he takes off with fellow enthusiast and machinist Ed Leppert to take photos at Cazadero OR at the time a stop on the Estacada Interurban Railway Line of the PRL&P Co. catching Train No 62 shot logging pictures below Boring OR and then fishing near the Clackamas River at Eagle Creek OR. Leppert 1867-1934 was a fellow Ohioan at the time working for PRL & P Co. as well as in the Albina shipyards and 3 years later moved to Ogden UT before returning to Portland. Aug. 28 1910 they took Ed along with the family for a week vacation at Seaside OR after loading the camera “and all manner of junk into one back-pack two baskets and a suitcase.†Once again the family was running late missed the connection and barely made Union Station in time to catch the 9:15 train on the Astoria & Columbia Railway to Seaside in three hours along the scenic River. Bert writes they secured a “Furnished Tent†for $ 7.00 for the week and began shooting photos along the beach of the bathers the ocean the Hotel Moore and the breakers and did some crab fishing. One of the days the sun was out so Ed and Bert “loaded up our stereo camera & tripod and started down the beach.†They trekked along the sand and rocks “watched a number of porpoises or ‘sea hogs’ sporting in the Ocean a short distance off shore. . . and wished for a telephoto lens.†By the time the pair had lugged their camera to the lighthouse the fog had rolled in obscuring the scenery. Elva Reck 1877-1955 according to census records and street directories had opened a “Racket Store†by 1920 which she operated for a few years. Bert Reck 1877-1972 had moved his family from Ohio by 1903 where he began a lifelong career as a streetcar motorman as well as shooting and selling photos of hikes on Mt. Hood digging clams visiting Nye Beach in Newport Depoe Bay and other areas around the PNW. He frequently took photos along the line he ran from Sellwood to Cazadero to the dam. Two ink drawings on paper depicting the same view of Guanabara bay with a banana plantation and the Pao de Açucar near Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. This scene has also been included in Flora Brasiliensis as plate LV in volume 1.1. Plate LV is lithographed after a drawing by Belgian artist and botanist Benjamin Mary 1792-1846 made in 1837. The largest drawing of the two present here ad 1 is believed to be this drawing by Mary.Flora Brasiliensis is a 15-volume work on Brazilian plants edited by botanist Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius and others. It was published between 1840 and 1906 and systematically categorised the known plants in the region. The numerous plates were designed by many different artists including Benjamin Mary. He lived in Rio de Janeiro from 1832-1837 so his Brazilian drawings were based on his own observations. Although the present drawing is unsigned it can be attributed to Mary due to stylistic similarities with his other works its exact likeness to the litho in Flora Brasiliensis and its provenance both drawings are from the collection of the Von Martius family.The second drawing depicts the same scene but is clearly made by a different artist. It is signed "A. L." in the lower left corner. This work has been attributed to Carl August Lebschée 1800-1877 a German artist who also made drawings for the Flora Brasiliensis. However this is uncertain because he typically monogrammed his work with C. Issue for 1888 in glazed printed wrappers 13cm x 8.5cm; remaining issues in uncoated wrappers 14.5cm x 8cm; contents range from 56pp to 72pp. A few with slight discoloration and/or wear to wrappers but all complete sound and unmarked; Very Good overall. <br /> <br /> A collection of six successive issues of this biennial prospectus and directory for the mill city of Fall River Massachusetts intended to advertise the prospects for residency and industry in what was at the time the fastest-growing industrial city in New England known particularly for its output of printed cotton cloth. Each issue includes an updated list of operating textile mills together with a wealth of statistical data including annual yardage produced number of workers employed city population etc. Though clearly written from the manufacturers' perspective these small publications taken together provide valuable background for understanding the social milieu of a late-19th century mill town painting a clear picture of the city's rapid growth from 1.8 million spindles in 1888 to nearly 4 million in 1910 and the enormous wealth produced for mill owners during this period from $18M in capital stock to $34M in the same period - wealth that most certainly did not filter down to a workforce comprised mainly of immigrant millworkers many of whom were children under the age of twelve. Front and rear outer joints repaired.<br /> <br /> "Sir William Fraser 1816-1898 was a genealogist archivist and Scottish historian. Trained as a solicitor his professional involvement with peerage cases began a lifetime of research into the genealogy of Scotland's most prominent landed families" Edinburgh University Library. His Colia's Whispers is a collection of poetry inflected by Victorian tastes for historicism and revivalist styles. The text is accompanied by five George Cruikshank etching on India paper are five out of eight compartments of a large plate etched by G.C. for Sir William Fraser in 1870 for Poems by the Knight of Morar. "Only fifty numbered copies were issued of this edition and consequently it is scarce" Cohn. George Cruikshank 1792-1878 was one of the most famous British caricaturists and illustrators during the Regency period. He would form a friendship with Charles Dickens illustrating many of his books and later in life would be active in the temperance movement. <br /> <br /> "The Riviere Bindery was one of the most notable and prolific shops in London's West End from about 1840 through 1939" Princeton. Bath-based Bayntun Bindery acquired the firm in 1939 transforming into the "Bayntun-Riviere bindery" which is still in existence and family owned. F. Harvey unknown

Despite his struggles with mental illness Charles Lamb 1775 - 1834 would be celebrated for his literary contributions producing a range of material from essays to poems. Handsomely bound by Rivière & Son ca. 1927 stamp-signed on front turn-in in full medium blue morocco with a very ornate multi-fillet gilt frame enclosing a vari-colored morocco onlaid illustration with painted highlights reproducing the black and white plate in the book "So To Bed" facing p.400. Gilt ornamented raised bands. Gilt framed compartments with ornate gilt centerpieces. Gilt tooled edges and turn-ins marbled paste-downs and end-leaves publisher's pictorial end-papers bound in at end all edges gilt. Minimal fading to spine light and almost imperceptible mark on rear cover otherwise fine.<br /> <br /> Samuel Pepys 1633-1703 was an English naval bureaucrat and member of Parliament who is now most famous for his diary. Hailed as a significant primary source for Restoration-era England the diary spans the years 1660-69 as Pepys ages from 27 to 36 years and was "written in Thomas Shelton's system of shorthand or tachygraphy with the names in longhand it extends to 1250000 words filling six quarto volumes." Britannica. Pepys was a highly inquisitive man and filled his pages with lively descriptions of people as well as documented his experiences living through "the Restoration and coronation; the horrors of the Plague; and the Fire of London" Britannica. In this edition of his dairy Ernest H. Shepard's illustrations enliven these first-hand experiences for readers.<br /> <br /> "The Riviere Bindery was one of the most notable and prolific shops in London's West End from about 1840 through 1939" Princeton. "Like the Odyssey or the Vita Nuova it was once the most widely known and quoted work of Victorian poetry in the world" and its place in Western culture at the time was secured by Fitzgerald's "epigrammatic sophisticated often mordant verses that display Fitzgerald's adroitness in handling this stanza form" Warner. Yet with rise of Modernism the Rubaiyat fell out of style for a time its lush and romantic orientalism considered out of step with the concerns of those who were living through a devastating World War. But the beautiful surviving copies in exceptional vellum silk and leather alongside recently released critical editions have helped draw attention back to the Rubaiyat's beauty and its role in inspiring so many monumental pieces of Victorian art and literature. A wonderful example of the art of 'pointillé'.<br /> <br /> The Scottish author critic and thinker Thomas Carlyle 1795-1881 was a major influence on Victorian society. His novel Sartor Resartus translated as The Tailor Re-tailored among other variations is a satirical look at the work of a fictional philosopher Diogenes Teufelsdröckh. Intriguing in its form the book is structured from the prospective of a skeptical English reviewer consumed by Teufelsdröckh's book Clothes Their Origin and Influence. In crafting Sartor Resartus Carlyle drew on a range of literary influences: Goethe Hegel Sterne and Switft. Carlyle's complicated text not only critiques academic writing and materialism but offers meditations on the meanings of symbols and the search for truth. First published as a humorous column in Fun magazine in 1876 Gilbert collected fifty of his favorite poems for the book Fifty "Bab" Ballads:Much Sound and Little Sense it contained one poem collected for the first time titled "Etiquette" and excluded 25 previously published poems. As Gilbert explained: "The period during which they were written extended over some three or four years; many however were composed hastily and under the discomforting necessity of having to turn out a quantity of lively verse by a certain day in every week. As it seemed to me and to others that the volumes were disfigured by the presence of these hastily written impostors I thought it better to withdraw from both volumes such Ballads as seemed to show evidence of carelessness or undue haste and to publish the remainder in the compact form under which they are now presented to the reader" Gilbert. However "Gilbert's readers were not happy with the loss and in 1882 Gilbert published all of the poems that had appeared in either The "Bab" Ballads or More "Bab" Ballads once again excluding "Etiquette." Some twentieth-century editions of More "Bab" Ballads include "Etiquette" Ellis. The poems range from satire to absurdist texts and will surely entertain all who read them.<br /> <br /> "The Riviere Bindery was one of the most notable and prolific shops in London's West End from about 1840 through 1939" Princeton. Octavo 7 1/8 x 4 1/2 in; 181 x 113 mm. lxxxix 4 454 14 as Anglers' Calendar pp. Black and white illustrations throughout some full-page. Initials and vignettes. Inserted limitation leaf "With Water/Colour Drawings/on/Calf Doublures/by/signed Helen R. Haywood." Bound by Rivière & Son c. 1926 stamp-signed in gilt on front turn-in. Full forest green crushed morocco covers with gilt double-rule border spine with five raised bands decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments. Double gilt-ruled board edges decorative gilt ruled turn-ins enclosing calf doublures with full angling-themed original watercolor paintings. Green moire silk free endpapers all edges gilt. Housed in a felt-lined green cloth clamshell case spine with leather label lettered in gilt. <br /> <br /> Izaak Walton's The Compleate Angeler 1653 is perhaps the quintessential pastoral work on fishing. Structured as a dialogue between a fisherman huntsman and fowler the book is a celebration of the natural world and the thrills of fishing as a pastime. The two exquisite original watercolors on calf elegantly reproduce at the front "Come now bait your hook again and lay it into the water for it rains again" Compleat Angler Fourth Day and at the rear "Marry God requite you sir and we'll eat it cheerfully" Compleat Angler Third Day. Helen Riviere Haywood 1908-1995 was an English painter children's book illustrator and writer best known for her foredge paintings. She came from a book-binding family: Haywood was the granddaughter Robert Riviere founder of the great bindery which executed this lovely binding and her uncle who also worked for the firm introduced her to foredge and double foredge painting. Between the 1930s-1970s she completed multiple commissions for Inman's Books a New York City based antiquarian book dealer. From her intertest in science anthropology and naturalism Haywood developed a keen attention to the world's natural elements; this talent for observation and specificity found its way into her artwork.<br /> <br /> Provenance: Purchased by David Brass Rare Books from John & Judith Head May 2012; sold to Randal Moscovitz December 2012.
