Hardcover. no dust jacket sharp-looking copy nice and clean with very slight wear to a couple of corners and a tiny white stain at the bottom edge of the rear cover; one-time owner's name and date of purchase written at top of front pastedown. Novel centered around the building of a mighty dam in the American west to tame the waters of a mighty river. Obviously inspired by the construction of Hoover Dam which was dedicated and already functional although not 100% completed on September 30 1935 the novel was not especially well-reviewed one reviewer called it "a hodge-podge so bewildering and repetitious that the plot becomes inarticulate although the power of its imagery and the treatment of details attendant to the construction of the dam were generally recognized. One reviewer perhaps nailed its problems when he wrote that "in this story the individuals are unimportant but the canyon the treacherous river and the toil of men to conquer both are engrossing." Another commented that the authors "write like engineers"; I don't think it was intended as a compliment. The authors had both done some screenwriting and according to several reviews they had collaborated on the script for HELL DIVERS 1932 -- but the only problem with that "fact" is that although the movie was based on an original story by Wead River isn't among the film's half-dozen or so contributing writers. for an Autograph Souvenir of the "Grand National Bazaar" 5" x 4" printed in red blue and gold no place 28th June to 2nd July By the time that temperance organisations came into being the bazaar was well established as a social and money-making event and formed a staple of social programmes in London and around the country. Some assumed gigantic proportions. In 1875 for example a six-day Grand Bazaar and Fancy Fair was held at the Great Central Hall Bishopsgate Street. Various musical performances enlivened each day including bands and handbell ringers and each evening from 6pm an entertainment programme was given every half-hour featuring many singers actors and comedians. Other attractions were a large collection of working models a large collection of curiosities works of art dresses and more Bazaars which usually charged an entrance fee of sixpence to a shilling raised a huge amount of money for their sponsoring charities. I imagine this card would have been sold as part of the fund-raising. unknown

The book has very nice shelf appeal with a leathe rlabel showing some wear. Original color-illus. wraps finely bound-into coarse woven beige cloth. with remnants of leather spine label. 273 pp.; 58 plates 12 in color including the frontis and 2 dry-point; several bw illustrations within the text including 2 bw photographs of Renoir. Text in French. Lists of all illustrations are included. This copy is not numbered and does not appear to be one of the special 150 copies printed on Japan paper. contains two original drypoint etchings as per the contents: "La Danse a la Campagne" on page 66 and "Jeunes Filles Fleurissant Leurs Chapeaux" on page 226 which has a distinct plate impression on the reverse which is lacking on the first. Over-all a very nice copy with clear bw images and vibrancy in the color plates. Written in 15 chapters including coverage of the expositions of 1874 1876 and 1877 Renoir's atelier on Rue Saint-Georges the soiress of Madame Charpentier and so much more. Rare with both plates. H. Riviere was the first to describe stenosis of the aortic valve from a case that he treated in 1646. GM 2727 cites Riviere's description of this condition in his Opera medica universa 1674 of which the present work is the first edition; the description appears here on p. 177 and is entitled "Cordis palpitatio & pulsus inaequalitas." Riviere also brought Paracelsian iatrochemistry into the curriculum of the University of Montpellier and it was under his auspices that Alexander Fraser introduced the Harviean theory of the circulation into the University's curriculum in 1636. An edition of the present work was published in The Hague in the same year as this Lyons edition. As Riviere was French it is reasonable to presume that the Lyons edition was first. Hirsch.
