br. Che cos'è, esattamente, la «cultura»! Il termine cultura ha conosciuto, negli ultimi anni, una diffusione esponenziale, uscendo dall'ambito accademico e contagiando il dibattito pubblico, che proprio sulle questioni relative ai temi delle identità collettive e delle presunte frizioni tra «culture» si infiamma. Più che una ricognizione storica del termine, si tratta di ripensare la legittimità del suo uso, considerando che eminenti filosofi del Novecento (Heidegger, Adorno e Derrida, per citarne alcuni) hanno criticato la sua tenuta semantica. Al centro del lavoro sta la figura di Hölderlin, che più di tutti ha pensato la questione del rapporto tra cultura, terra e spirito. In un'epoca nella quale le decostruzioni delle identità e le pressioni di culture «altre» ne mettono in crisi ogni declinazione monolitica, il primo passo da compiere è quello di chiedersi che cosa questo termine significhi. È probabile che il primo gesto pienamente «culturale» sia quello di chiedersi che cosa sia la cultura.

Le località interessate nell'itinerario di viaggio sono: Atene, Smirne, Sardi, Efeso, Brussa e il Monte Olimpo, Troia, Nicomedia, Angota, Cesarea di Cappadocia, la Mesopotamia, Aleppo, Antiochia, Sidone, il Libano, Hamah, Palmira, San Giovanni d'Acri, Damasco, la Palestina, Tiberiade, Nazareth, Nablus, Gerusalemme e i Luoghi Santi, il Mar Morto, Betlemme. Il Poujoulat (La Fare-les-Oliviers, 1809-Aix-en-Provence, 1864) fu storico, fratello di un altro noto storico e uomo politico, Jean Joseph François, che lo mandò proprio in Medio Oriente nel 1836 per trovare nuovi documenti per la storia delle Crociate (da tale viaggio giovanile egli trasse la materia per il presente resoconto). "Tandis que son frère accompagne Michaud en Syrie en 1830 - la fameuse Correspondance d’Orient (1831) est la publication de l’échange de leurs lettres - Baptistin part en 1836 pour un Voyage à Constantinople, dans l’Asie mineure, en Mésopotamie, à Palmyre, en Syrie en Palestine et en Égypte (1840) afin de compléter le travail documentaire de ses prédécesseurs. Ses connaissances assez fines de l’histoire de l’Empire ottoman font de ses descriptions un témoignage valeureux, si l’on fait la part du mépris général qu’il a pour l’Islam et pour les Ottomans. Ses observations sur la guerre qui sévit alors en Syrie avec l’avancée des Égyptiens constituent un témoignage de choix sur une période et des évènements peu explorés. Témoin de l’appauvrissement de la population pressée notamment par les méthodes de l’armée des Égyptiens, il ne suit pas ses compatriotes dans l’admiration qu’ils prônent pour Mohamed Ali Pacha: il ne voit dans le "Bonaparte du Nil" qu’un despote "occupé à couvrir avec le masque de la civilisation sa face de tyran".. Pp. 565-656 a. 7 lithographed plates. <br/><br/><em>First appearance of this importent paper for which Poynting was awarded the Adams Prize of Cambridge."These days John Henry Poynting is best known for his association with the Poynting vector which describes the flow of energy in an electromagnetic field and little is known of his life or work. Yet in the 1890s he caught the popular imagination as `the man who weighed the Earth'. His experiment using a novel method with a common balance was part of a heroic tradition gained him Cambridge University's Adams Prize and set new standards of precision. Yet in performing this experiment Poynting seemed to step outside the traditions of late nineteenth century Cambridge University where he was educated and it is probably significant that he was a Unitarian throughout his life."Isobel Falconer. </em> unknown
