ill., br. La storia dei reparti RSI schierati sul fronte delle Alpi Occidentali. Intere Divisioni vennero impiegate nel contrastare le mire dei Francesi che intendevano annettere larghe porzioni del territorio del Piemonte e della Valle d'Aosta che, secondo loro, anelavano a diventare francesi. Oltre che con l'occupazione militare, i Francesi svilupparono una forte propaganda e un pesante appoggio alle forze autonomiste presenti nella Valle d'Aosta, con il chiaro intento di scorporare tutta, o in parte, la Regione dall'Italia. A far fronte agli attacchi delle truppe francesi, appoggiate da reparti americani, e sostenuti pesantemente dalla ricchissima logistica alleata, erano poche truppe tedesche e molti reparti italiani di alpini, granatieri, bersaglieri, paracadutisti, artiglieri, migliaia di soldati che combatterono sino alla fine di aprile, e alcuni sino al 5 maggio, per bloccare l'avanzata dei Francesi e consentire alle truppe alleate, risalenti dalla Linea Gotica, di raggiungere prima dei transalpini i confini.

Con le sue doti di brillante conversatore l'Autore conduce un divertente discorso sul "meteo", costellato di citazioni e riferimenti dotti che vanno da Lucrezio a Giulio Cesare e a Plinio il Giovane, dalla mitologia hittita alla Bibbia, da Fritz Lang a Fred Astaire, da Vivaldi a Debussy e così via fino alla "soluzione di Montreal" e al prevedibile avvento (ormai in atto) di un cesarismo tecnologico universale. Una conclusione che dimostra come per Cyprien, per dirla un po' alla Wilde, non c'è discorso più serio di quello fatto con leggerezza.

Le necessità legate all'entrata in vigore della nuova normativa antisismica (Norme tecniche per le costruzioni) hanno dato grande slancio alla diffusione di talune tecniche basate sull'analisi della propagazione delle onde di superficie, ma la comprensione delle varie metodologie e dei problemi a esse connaturati non è certamente andata di pari passo. Lo scopo di questo libro è quindi quello di fornire alcuni strumenti concettuali utili nell'analisi dei dati. Si vedrà come le tecniche analizzate non debbano in nessun modo essere considerate solamente rispetto alle necessità della nuova normativa ma rappresentino invece, se bene utilizzate, un potente strumento di indagine del sottosuolo (per molti versi decisamente superiore rispetto ad esempio alla comune sismica a rifrazione), applicabile in qualsiasi problema di carattere geotecnico. In virtù del desiderio di unificare teoria e pratica e mostrare altresì talune potenzialità di queste metodologie, il volume è costituito da una prima sezione di natura prettamente teorica e da un'appendice in cui, alla luce di quanto precedentemente illustrato, vengono esaminati alcuni casi studio.

Bound in the original dark biege wraps printed in black. The spine and edges of the wraps are mildly sun faded. This is from the library of and bears the tiny ink stamp and signature of Robert B. Sosman. A geophysicist and physical chemist Robert Browning Sosman authored THE PHASES OF SILICA 1965 New Brunswick: Rutgers University Press. Sosman received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1907 at the age of 26. By 1908 he had joined the Geo-Physical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution. Dr. Sosman worked at the Geo-Physical Laboratory for 20 years serving 8 years as Assistant Director. During World War I his contributions were instrumental in establishing America's capacity for manufacturing optical glass. In 1928 he left to join the United States Steel Corporation as Assistant Director of Research. Following his retirement from U.S. Steel in 1947 he became visiting professor of Ceramics at Rutgers University. Dr. Sosman was a past president of the American Ceramic Society. In his honor the Society established The Robert B. Sosman Award "the highest recognition of scientific accomplishment given by the Basic Science Division. in recognition of outstanding achievement in basic science of an area that results in a significant impact to the field of ceramics.".
