The text is taken from HISTORY OF LITTLETON published earlier the same year. Cover is in Good condition -- a little sun darkened. NO chips tears or creases. Internal condtion is FINE. This is from the libraries of and bears the tiny ink stamps of both Henry Stephens Washington 1867-1934 and later Robert B. Sosman. In his tribute to Washington available online Charles Milton notes that Washington was "one of the most eminent members" of the National Academy of Sciences and fluent in 10 languages. Also discussed are his work at the Carnegie Institution Geophysical Laboratory as vice-president of the Geological Society of America and his PROFESSIONAL PAPER 99 that is "known to every geologist in the world." A geophysicist and physical chemist Robert Browning Sosman authored THE PHASES OF SILICA 1965 New Brunswick: Rutgers University Press. Sosman received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1907 at the age of 26. By 1908 he had joined the Geo-Physical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution. Dr. Sosman worked at the Geo-Physical Laboratory for 20 years serving 8 years as Assistant Director. During World War I his contributions were instrumental in establishing America's capacity for manufacturing optical glass. In 1928 he left to join the United States Steel Corporation as Assistant Director of Research. Following his retirement from U.S. Steel in 1947 he became visiting professor of Ceramics at Rutgers University. Dr. Sosman was a past president of the American Ceramic Society. In his honor the Society established The Robert B.
