Everson William "Brother Antoninus"; Eschner Robin Artist
Mexican Standoff
Emeryville California: The Lapis Press 1989. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. Eschner Robin. One of 100 copies no. 23 per frontis quarto size 7 pp. signed by poet on colophon and by artist on frontispiece. William Everson 1912-1994 also known as "Brother Antoninus" was a leading poet of the San Francisco Renaissance as well as being a teacher and small press printer. He worked closely with other leading San Francisco beat poets including Kenneth Rexroth and looked to another famous California poet as his master Robinson Jeffers. The name "Brother Antoninus" by which he also published poetry was taken by him when he joined the Roman Catholic Church in 1951 as a member of the Dominican Order; he thus became known as the "Beat Friar". This achingly lovely little volume was essentially self-published by Everson printed at the Lapis Press and contains a single poem spanning three pages. The volume opens with a signed numbered woodcut by Robin Eschner. Robin Eschner grew up in a family that explored the natural world. Her father is a geologist whose enthusiasm for the local terrain is legendary. At an early age Eschner understood the connection to and responsibility for plants animals and the landscape. She was educated at the University of California at Davis Graduating with a combination B.S. degree in Botany and Fine Art. As a painter she has spent nearly 25 years exploring those relationships in nature N. B. info from Erickson Fine Art Gallery website. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in orange cloth with a cream paper label on the spine with black lettering rough-cut edges woodcut illustration by Robin Eschner as the frontispiece orange and black lettering on the title page designed and printed by Les Ferriss at The Lapis Press in Emeryville California; quarto size 10" by 6" pagination: frontispiece 1 title page 2 blank 3-5 blank 6 colophon 7; limited edition this number 23 of 100 copies signed and numbered by the artist on the frontispiece signed by the poet on the colophon; in a glassine wrapper. ___CONDITION: Fine condition with clean vivid orange cloth boards without wear corners straight and unrubbed the binding tight with solid hinges the interior clean and bright and free of prior owner markings; clean crisp as new.
