A Guide to the Sources of United States Military History: Supplement I
Archon 1981 Hamden US first edition hard bound in blue cloth no dj VG condition - light scuffing to covers 6 x 9 xii 300 pages. -----------------------------------------Most of the authors contributing articles to this Supplement participated in the publication of the original Guide to the Sources of the United States Military History in 1975. All were asked to continue their files collecting important bibliographic information in their fields especially for the period between 1973 and 1978. In this way a supplement could be readily assembled that would extend the coverage provided by the original volume. In a few cases however at the request of the original authors new contributors entered the project building on the basis of the 1975 volume. -----------------------------------------------------------The editors and publisher agreed that several significant areas that had not been treated directly in the original Guide merited coverage in complete chapters. Hence this Supplement includes extensive treatment of the United States Marine Corps nuclear war and arms control military law martial law and military government and U.S. government documentation in chapters specifically devoted to each of those topics. These new essays were numbered so as to follow the sequence of the original nineteen chapters and thereby to minimize any difficulty in using the original Guide and the Supplement together. With few exceptions all essays and material included in this volume were written and received by 1979. The authors have been asked to continue their files with the intent of producing a succeeding quinquennial supplement. hardcover

AIR POWER: A Concise History
St. Martins NY 1972. Hardcover w/ dj . Book Condition: VG/VG condition 6 x 9American first Edition. illustrated 282 pages. illus bibliog. index. --------------------------The question of how air power can best be developed in peace and used in war is one to which very varied answers have been given both in theory and in practice since the outbreak of the First World War. Some Air Forces have been created and used almost exclusively as long-range artillery' for land or sea forces. Others have been looked on as self-sufficient strategic weapons capable of deciding the issue of even major wars on their own. In addition many enthusiasts for air power have tended to treat war in the air as something totally different from war on land or sea and therefore not subject to the same overriding principles. In Air Power Robin Higham examines the development of military aviation over the last sixty years in the light of the commonly accepted principles of warConcentration of Effort Control Simplicity Co-operation of all Arms Surprise Speed of Action Seizing the Initiative. He shows how all too often their lessons have been forgotten or ignored with disastrous consequences and emphasises how frequently their application as in the pinpoint Mosquito raids of the Second World War has achieved success. He also shows the vital importance of that 'wave' movement of development by which expansion is followed first by consolidation and then by the instability of retrenchment and demonstrates how in peacetime a concentration on research and the production of many aircraft types in small numbers may produce the optimum results during a subsequent war. hardcover

Shoe String Press Hamden CT 1961. Hardbound in dj 6 x 9 Fine/Fine condition dj price clipped US first edition Reprint. 407 pages plates maps tables -----------------------------Dr. Higham gives in this book a general picture of the growth of British civil air transport from the slender experimental beginnings such as the Hendon-Windsor mail of 1910 through to the formation of II Imperial Airways in 1934. He shows the impetus given to aircraft production by the 1914-18 war and presents a carefully analysed account of the operational and financial fortunes of each of the four companiesHolt-Thomas's Air Transport and Travel Company Handley Page Transport Daimler Airway and the In-stone Airline. Each of these Companies made a brave fight against official apathy and lack of foresight and for subsidies in the struggle with foreign competition. Dr. Higham explains the need that was later felt to justify these subsidies by the formation of a monopoly Company which could undertake the expansion needed to place civil aviation on a firm financial base and establish a great British Airline. So there emerges the genesis of Imperial Airways which was placed in the awkward position of being expected to be both a successful Commercial Company and the chosen instrument of Imperial Policy.
