In the Preface to the British edition--not printed here--Cyril Connolly remarked that Robin Maugham was "not an imaginative artist but like his uncle Somerset Maugham a story-teller." One can hardly agree because this novel is both imaginative and a wonderful story. It is about an older and wealthy gay exile living in Tangiers who uses his money and cleverness to find a boy whom he believes he can mould and educate.
