London: Printed by Richard Tayor for the Author 1837 A fair copy of the 1st edition in contemporary full leather binding with black and white frontispiece and folding map of Shetland. Classed as 'fair' because it lacks the map of Orkney. It is otherwise in very good clean condition. Robert Dunn titles himself as an 'animal-preserver' - which sadly does not mean that he was a conservationist. The book is a full account of his travels and the various species that he encountered and then shot and presumably stuffed when he was back home. The binding is in very good condition with faded gilt titles down the spine and plain boards with ruled lines to edges. It has general wear to spine joints and edges and a small scuff and a mark to the front board. The original endpapers are present - there is a small split developing at the rear endpaper joint. Contents with advertising sheet; half title; frontispiece; title page - with small signature to the top; dedication; introduction; notice to subscribers; folding map of Shetland; text 128pp; 2 final blanks. First edition. There have been many writings on the subject of Nova Scotian bird life but not a comprehensive work. With his own meticulous records the co-operation of other students of birds including his own pupils in the subject and with full access to the records of Harry Piers longtime Curator of the Provincial Museum Robie Tufts has produced a work which will be the standard around which later contributions will arrange themselves. That there will be additions and revisions is sure; he was reluctant to call the manuscript finished knowing that there would be additions by the time the book appeared and this has been the case. Tufts' book is finished and will not be superseded for some time though observations records and notes will be more numerous and general interest will be quickened because of it. Condition: Jacket spine ends rubbed and chipped edge wear with some chips and closed tears else a very good to fine copy in a very good jacket. Nova Scotia Museum hardcover
