Shakespeare for children Tales from Shakespeare Hardcover
2022. Hardcover. New. About The Book : He following Tales are meant to be submitted to the young reader as an introduction to the study of Shakespeare for which purpose his words are used whenever it seemed possible to bring them in; and in whatever has been added to give them the regular form of a connected story In those Tales which have been taken from the Tragedies as my young readers will perceive when they come to see the source from which these stories are derived Shakespeares own words with little alteration recur very frequently in the narrative as well as in the dialogue; I have wished to make these Tales easy reading for very young children. To the utmost of my ability. I have constantly kept this in my mind; but the subjects of most of them made this a very difficult task. Charles and Mary Lamb
Tales From Shakespeare:

48 44 exciting illustrations by A. E. Jackson. Most of the illustrations just jump off the page because there is no black line box to contain them. The colour illustration on the front cover and found on p. 135 show Orlando etching Rosalind's name on the trunks of tree after tree in Shakespeare's 'As You Like It". There is a lovely 2-page endpaper both front and back with no reference to it in the book; it appears that there are groups of people standing around and talking and they are from the various plays.

As usual I counted the colour illustration pages; I counted them twice and got 44 illustration pages both times. Then I went slowly through the book copying down each play in this book prose stories and the number of colour illustrations in each. Everything lines up there are and have only ever been in this book 44 illustration pages.

Obviously whoever was responsible for putting this book together didn't bother to change the number on the front cover from 48 to 44 and the same on the title page. So there's nothing missing from the book and that makes the book a little more interesting.
Ward, Lock & Co. hardcover

Charles and Mary Lamb
TALES FROM SHAKSPEARE Hardcover
2022. Hardcover. New. About the book:- Tales from Shakespeare is an English children's book written by the siblings Charles and Mary Lamb in 1807 intended ""for the use of young persons"" while retaining as much Shakespearean language as possible. Mary Lamb was responsible for retelling the comedies and Charles the tragedies. They omitted the more complex historical tales including all Roman plays and modified those they chose to retell in a manner sensitive to the needs of young children but without resorting to actual censoring. However subplots and sexual references were removed. They wrote the preface together. Marina Warner in her introduction to the 2007 Penguin Classics edition claims that Mary did not get her name on the title page till the seventh edition in 1838. Despite its original target audience ""very young"" children from the early twenty-first century might find this book a challenging read and alternatives are available. Nevertheless the retelling of Lamb siblings remains uniquely faithful to the original and as such can be useful to children when they read or learn the plays as Shakespeare wrote them. About the Author:-.Charles Lamb 1775 1834 was an English essayist poet and antiquarian best known for his Essays of Elia and for the children's book Tales from Shakespeare co-authored with his sister Mary Lamb 17641847. Friends with such literary luminaries as Samuel Taylor Coleridge Robert Southey William Wordsworth and William Hazlitt Lamb was at the centre of a major literary circle in England.
