Lincoln:: University of Nebraska Press 2012. Fine in gray illustrated wrappers. Advance Reading Copy trade paperback format. "The campaign to desegregate baseball was one of the most important civil rights stories of the 1930s and 1940s. . . Even today as far as most Americans know the integration of baseball revolved around Branch Rickey's signing of Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers organization in 1945. This book shows how Rickey's move critical as it may well have been came after more than a decade of work by black and left-leaning journalists to desegregate the game. Drawing on hundreds of newspaper articles and interviews with journalists Chris Lamb reveals how differently black and white newspapers and black and white America viewed racial equality. He shows how white mainstream sportswriters perpetuated the color line by participating in what their black counterparts called a 'conspiracy of silence.' Between 1933 and 1945 black newspapers and the Communist Daily Worker published hundreds of articles and editorials calling for an end to baseball's color line. The efforts of the alternative presses. . constitute one of baseball's - and the civil rights movement's - great untold stories." Notes bibliography. xiii 374 pp plus several blank pages. Washington DC: The Institute of World Politics Press 2013. Presumed First Edition First printing but note printing date of 2015 on last page. Trade paperback. Good. xv 1 291 1 pages. Appendixes. Selected Bibliography. Index. Rear cover creased. Some sticker residue on back cover. Foreword by Lieutenant General Michael T. Flynn. Human Terrain Teams HTTs are five- to nine-person teams deployed by the Human Terrain System HTS to support field commanders by filling their cultural knowledge gap in the current operating environment and providing cultural interpretations of events occurring within their area of operations. The team is composed of individuals with social science and operational backgrounds that are deployed with tactical and operational military units to assist in bringing knowledge about the local population into a coherent analytic framework and build relationships with the local power-brokers in order to provide advice and opportunities to Commanders and staffs in the field. Human Terrain comprises the entire spectrum of society and culture. This should be the focus of the HTA's interpretation. In non-kinetic roles the population is the primary battlefield and the HTA will have considerable knowledge of this aspect. The HTA will need to determine how to win the support of the local population how a certain COA will mitigate distrust between the local population and will use their extensive familiarity with all aspects of the local society and culture to make those determinations. The nature of the unit's involvement role and objectives will also color the HTA's conclusions and recommendations. The HTA's interpretation will vary according to the unit's role whether that be counterinsurgency nation building occupation peace keeping kinetic operations or a combination of these roles. The American military's focus and training continue to revolve around kinetic operations. Most units don't understand the principles of their role even if they did want to conduct it. The more educated the HTA is in these non-kinetic roles the more he/she will be able to provide useful analysis and recommendations. The Institute of World Politics Press paperback
