This collection of essays were first published in book form in 1823 and first printed in the World's Classics in April 1901 with this volume being reprinted in December 1901. In quarter decorative green morocco with marbled endpapers. Bound by Hatchards. Lamb's essays began appearing in The London Magazine in 1820 until 1825. The personal and conversational tone charmed the readers and were thus very popular among nineteenth century society. Lamb himself is the 'Elia' of the collection and his sister Mary is 'Cousin Bridget'. The author first used the pseudonym Elia for an essay on the South Sea House for it was the last name of an Italian man who worked there with him decades earlier. Lamb was friends with literary luminaries such as Samuel Taylor Coleridge William Wordsworth and William Hazlitt. In quarter morocco. Externally very smart. Methuen London 1902 Superb and vigorous illustrations by Garth Jones in vignette and full page examples decorate this attractive first printing of what is a first edition thus. The text block is gilt at the top trimmed edge but the other two edges are ragged. The two colour title page has a frontispiece with plate mark. This is the most inviting way in to these various works some of them wise and others wise and witty. An attractive green buckram with gilt design on the front and the spine. Corners are nice and square the text block is firm. This is the best copy of this attractive issue I have seen and great copies like this are RARE.
