Ces volumes publiés à Paris en 1835 représentent une extension significative de l'uvre originale de Buffon figure emblématique des Lumières françaises grâce à l'apport de Georges Cuvier éminent naturaliste de son époque. Alors que Buffon avait posé les bases de la zoologie moderne Cuvier enrichit cet héritage en intégrant des découvertes postérieures sur la faune encore inconnue du premier. Cette collaboration posthume illustre l'évolution des sciences naturelles au début du XIXe siècle marquant un pont entre le siècle des Lumières et les avancées scientifiques du XIXe siècle reflétant ainsi la continuité et l'expansion du savoir à travers les générations. Deuxième édition sous son titre définitif augmentée des Réflexions sur la déclamation et l'Éloge d'Athanase Auger avec d'autres pièces de Hérault de Séchelles. C'est en 1785 comme il venait d'être nommé avocat général au Parlement de Paris que Hérault de Séchelles alla voir l'éminent savant à Montbard où il resta deux jours à observer et interroger son hôte. Dans cet récit piquant l'orateur à la mode dresse un portrait domestique et familier du vieil académicien d'une plume irrévérencieuse mais aussi chaleureuse où perce au-delà d'un persiflage affectueux une sincère admiration.
