Deuxième édition sous son titre définitif augmentée des Réflexions sur la déclamation et l'Éloge d'Athanase Auger avec d'autres pièces de Hérault de Séchelles. C'est en 1785 comme il venait d'être nommé avocat général au Parlement de Paris que Hérault de Séchelles alla voir l'éminent savant à Montbard où il resta deux jours à observer et interroger son hôte. Dans cet récit piquant l'orateur à la mode dresse un portrait domestique et familier du vieil académicien d'une plume irrévérencieuse mais aussi chaleureuse où perce au-delà d'un persiflage affectueux une sincère admiration.
