Die gesuchte reich illustrierte Quartausgabe der Oeuvres complètes in einem schönen Exemplar. - Nissen 705. - Enthält Buffons zwischen 1749 und 1789 erstmals veröffentlichte Histoire naturelle die eine der ersten naturgeschichtlichen Darstellungen über Biologie und Geologie der Erde enthielt die sich nicht auf die Bibel berief. Dabei verwendete der Verfasser ausschließlich empirisch begründete Argumente um Naturerscheinungen zu erklären. Sein Hauptwerk gilt Nissen zufolge als die 'geistvollste und stilistisch gewandteste Naturgeschichte die bisher geschrieben wurde und mit Recht zur Weltliteratur gerechnet' wird Nissen 132. Die vorliegende Quartausgabe dieses Klassikers dokumentiert die nachhaltige Wirkungsgeschichte bis in die zweite Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts.
