Loosely inserted is card-bound proof of Stearn's article "Thunberg's Visit to Japan" that appears in the book along with proof title page etc. Pp. vii 594; numerous b/w plates. Dust jacket a little worn and rubbed to edges cut to rear jacket panel. Contents clean and tight pages edge a little marked. A very good copy. Scarce. Provenance: from the library of Prof. William Stearn with his bookplate to the front paste-down "doyen of British botanists" who wrote c. 500 papers and books including the classic "Botanical Latin".
