Amazon attributes this edition to Appleton and perhaps one exists but the publisher of this copy of the second edition is Thomas Y. Crowell. Appleton published the first American edition. This book is in good shape for its age with light fading to the spine but sound boards and binding. There is a little fraying to the top of the spine quite mild. There are no markings or inscriptions. The title page has a short tear at the top. The tissue guard of the frontispiece a portrait of the author is in excellent shape a rarity. The pages are toned but neither brittle nor foxed. There are many wonderful illustrations. Altogether a nice collectible for the Darwin fan. Handsomely bound in contemporaenous half-calf with marbled paper over boards and matching marbled edges and endpapers. Spine beautifully tooled in gilt within four compartments and lettered in gilt over black leather inlay. Name label of W. H. Hoskings possibly the New South Wales industrialist d. 1906 pasted in to blank space on page 5. Moderate wear to binding with bumping rubbing and indentations to leather-bound corners rubbing to edges and to head of spine and wear to exterior hinges. Hinges are a touch tender the front hinge moreso but binding remains sound. Foxing to flyleaves and to some preliminary and concluding pages most of text block unaffected and clear.
