DARWIN, Charles
Des differentes formes de fleurs dans les plantes de la meme espece
Paris: C. Reinwald 1878. FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH. Woodcut illustrations and tables in text. Original cloth; an excellent copy uncut and unopened. First edition in French of the author’s important work on the adaptation of plants. In these investigations Darwin crosses a “long styled†individual with another long styled flower to produce a comparatively infertile primrose illustrating a degree of sterility within the limits of a single species comparable to that produced in the crossing of distinct species. Darwin’s work on heterostyled plants bears on one of the most difficult points in the statement of the case for evolution the sterility of interspecific crosses and of hybrids. Darwin writes that the time involved in this research gave him more pleasure than almost any other. Freeman 1296. C. Reinwald unknown

London: John Murray 1871.

First edition first issue with "transmitted" appearing as the first word on p. 297 of Volume I with printer's imprint on the verso of the half-title of Volume II and with twenty-five errata seventeen for Volume I and eight for Volume II on the verso of the title leaf to Volume II and with the leaf pp. ix-x containing Darwin's note on "a serious and unfortunate error" tipped in leaf after p. viii in Volume II. Two small octavo volumes 7 1/2 x 4 15/16 inches; 191 x 126 mm Volume II is 5 mm shorter than volume I. viii 423 1 printer's imprint 16 publisher's ads; viiiix-x "Postscript" 475 1 printer's imprint 16 publisher's ads pp. The 16 pages of publisher's advertisements at the end of each volume are both dated January 1871 . Wood-engraved text illustrations.

Original green cloth with covers stamped in blind and spines stamped and lettered in gilt. Black-coated endpapers. Head and tail of spines with some minor shelf-wear. Corners slightly bumped. Some very light rubbing to board edges. Some minor bubbling to cloth of front board of volume II. Front inner hinge of volume I with a mostly closed crack holding firm. Previous owner's armorial bookplate on front pastedown of volume II. Some minor pencil markings to volume I otherwise very clean inside. Overall an exceptional set.

The first issue of 2500 copies was published on February 24 1871 and the second of 2000 copies in March. "The book in its first edition contains two parts the descent of man itself and selection in relation to sex. The word 'evolution' occurs for the first time in any of Darwin's works on page 2 of the first volume of the first edition that is to say before its appearance in the sixth edition of The Origin of Species in the following year. The last chapter is about sexual selection in relation to man and it ends with the famous peroration about man's lowly origin the wording of which differs slightly in the first edition from that which is usually quoted" Freeman p. 129.

"In the Origin Darwin had avoided discussing the place occupied by Homo sapiens in the scheme of natural selection stating only that 'light will be thrown on the origin of man and his history.' Twelve years later he made good his promise with The descent of man in which he compared man's physical and psychological characteristics to similar traits in apes and other animals showing how even man's mind and moral sense could have developed through evolutionary processes. In discussing man's ancestry Darwin did not claim that man was directly descended from apes as we know them today but stated simply that the extinct ancestors of Homo sapiens would have to be classified among the primates; however this statement as misinterpreted by the popular press caused a furor second only to that raised by the Origin" Norman Library. This title created almost as much sensation as his Origin of Species. In it he elaborated further on his views adding sexual selection and using the word 'evolution' for the first time.

Milestones of Science 48. Freeman Darwin 937. Garrison-Morton 170. Descent of Man The
Adelaide South Australia: Printed for The Limited Editions Club 1971. Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge:
it is those who know little not those who know much
who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science."

DARWIN Charles. The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex. With a Preface by Ashley Montagu and Drawings by Fritz Kredel. Adelaide South Australia: Printed for The Limited Editions Club 1971.

Limited to 1500 copies signed by Fritz Kredel this being no. 1201.

Large quarto 10 11/16 x 7 7/8 inches; 272 x 201 mm. 384 pp. Illustrated throughout with numerous black and white drawings some of which are full-page.

Publisher's quarter green Oasis morocco over natural 'wood veneer' paper boards spine decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt. Minimal fading to spine still a near fine copy in the publisher's matching slip-case.

Charles Robert Darwin 1809-1882 was an English naturalist and geologist best known for his contributions to evolutionary theory. He established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors and in a joint publication with Alfred Russel Wallace introduced his scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection in which the struggle for existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved in selective breeding. Darwin published his theory of evolution with compelling evidence in his 1859 book On the Origin of Species overcoming scientific rejection of earlier concepts of transmutation of species. By the 1870s the scientific community and much of the general public had accepted evolution as a fact. However many favored competing explanations and it was not until the emergence of the modern evolutionary synthesis from the 1930s to the 1950s that a broad consensus developed in which natural selection was the basic mechanism of evolution. In modified form Darwin's scientific discovery is the unifying theory of the life sciences explaining the diversity of life. Darwin has been described as one of the most influential figures in human history. He was honored by burial in Westminster Abbey.

The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex was first published in 1871. It applies evolutionary theory to human evolution and details Darwin's theory of sexual selection a form of biological adaptation distinct from yet interconnected with natural selection. The book discusses many related issues including evolutionary psychology evolutionary ethics differences between human races differences between sexes the dominant role of women in mate choice and the relevance of the evolutionary theory to society.

Fritz Kredel 1900-1973 was a German later American artist and graphic designer. In his early years he studied under Rudolf Koch at Offenbach School of Art and Design and developed skills in woodcuts. Koch and Kredel collaborated on A Book of Signs 1923 and The Book of Flowers 1930. Following Koch's death in 1934 Kredel moved to Frankfurt but in 1938 he fled Germany for political reasons with help from Melbert Cary. After emigrating to the United States that year he taught at Cooper Union in New York and continued to work as an artist. He produced illustrations for over 400 books in German and English and received many awards and honors. Many of his originals are now housed at the Art Library at Yale University.

Limited Editions Club Bibliography 435.
