‎London: John Murray 1876. The technical complement to the Fertilisation of Orchids First edition. Darwin's research on fertilization in plants was an offshoot of his work on evolution and natural selection. To demonstrate that genetic variation gave organisms an advantage in the struggle for survival he created stronger plants in those that had been cross-fertilized as opposed to self-fertilized. Despite its technical nature the book proved popular; published on 10 November all 1500 copies had sold by the end of the year. Octavo. With 3-line errata slip facing p. viii. Diagram and tables within text. Original green cloth spine lettered and decorated in gilt covers panelled in blind brown coated endpapers. Bookplate of Henry Wade Deacon 1852-1932 son of the chemist and industrialist Henry Deacon and with his ownership signature dated 1877 on title page. A very good copy the spine of which has some wear at the top including some small tears the side edges of the spine are a little rubbed in places there is a former owner's bookplate on the front paste-down endpaper and there is another former owner's signature on the front free endpaper and on the following page and there is a small chip 1/8" x 3/4" on the fore-edge of the front free endpaper. There is an erratum slip tipped-in before the contents. This is an attractive copy bound in its original light brown cloth with the gold lettering on the spine being nice and bright and with black decorations on the covers which are nearly totally clean. First edition second issue with three leaves of prelims the third leaf signed b; the last 2 signatures 2B1 2C4 with 2B1 and 2C1 and 2C2 signed; 'that' incorrectly spelt 'htat' on page 208. Freeman notes that the plates are found in two states in the first two issues of the text either numbered with roman or arabic numerals. In this copy they are arabic numerals. The <i>Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals</i>was Darwin's third major work of evolutionary theory following <i>On the Origin of Species</i> 1859 and <i>The Descent of Man</i> 1871. In this work Darwin explores the biological aspects of emotional behaviour and the animal origins of human emotional expression. To illustrate human emotion Darwin used photographs by five different photographers most notably Oscar Gustave Rejlander 1813�1875 who contributed 19 of the 30 photographs.
