‎DARWIN, Charles‎

‎The Formation of Vegetable Mould through the Action of Worms with Observations on their Habits‎

‎London: John Murray 1881. Hardcover. Very Good. London John Murray 1881 fourth thousand/ 1881. Octavo viii 326 2 list of Darwin's works colophon pages with 15 illustrations. Green cloth lettered and decorated in gilt on the spine and decorated in blind on the sides; all edges uncut; slight wear to the extremities; leaves adjacent to the endpapers foxed with scattered light foxing elsewhere; front hinge lightly stabilised; one preliminary leaf creased with a few short marginal tears expertly sealed; a few minor signs of age and use; a very good copy. 'This last book is outside the main stream of Darwin's work and reverts to his earlier geological interests. He had indeed published a paper on mould in 1838 in the "Proceedings of the Geological Society of London" Vol. ii pp. 5-74-76 which he had read to the Society in the previous year. The book was remarkably successful selling 6000 copies within a year and 13000 before the end of the century . Darwin comments that he corrected the sixth thousand of 1882' Freeman R.B.: 'The Works of Charles Darwin: An Annotated Bibliographical Handlist' page 33. Freeman 322. Darwin died on 19 April 1882 soon after the publication of this edition. <p>Provenance: Dr Kenneth Ernest Lee 1927-2007 distinguished NZ-born Australian soil scientist with his signature and 1982 book purchase details at the head of the title page. Loosely inserted in the book is his obituary: not least it records that Lee's influential 1985 publication 'Earthworms: their Ecology and Relationships with Soils and Land Use' was the direct descendant of Darwin's pioneering work. Mounted on the front pastedown is the earlier armorial bookplate of James Rankin 'Prudentia et Virtute'. John Murray hardcover‎

‎DARWIN, Charles‎

‎The Formation of Vegetable Mould through the Action of Worms with Observations on their Habits.‎

‎London: John Murray 1881. A fresh copy of his last book in the original cloth First edition first issue of the author's final book. Published the year before his death it was a remarkable success and sold 6000 copies within a year initially selling faster than the Origin of Species had done. The culmination of ten years of intensive research and close observation on the interaction of earthworms with their physical environment and their influence on great earth movements the work was Darwin's "leitmotif explaining vast changes by minute incremental events: mountain uplift evolving life and now worms transforming the soil" ODNB. The first impression of 2000 copies was apparently split between two equal issues the first without a "thousand" statement as here and the second with "second thousand" on the title; all issues thereafter had such a statement. Octavo. Woodcut and engraved figures in the text. Publisher's advertisement leaf at rear. Original green cloth spine lettered and decorated in gilt covers panelled in blind brown coated endpapers. Ownership inscription on first blank. Cloth with couple of bumps and tiny wear to corners but fresh overall superficial splits to sound inner hinges outer leaves foxed contents clean inconsequential paper flaw to lower corner of pp. 1/2. ‎The Formation Of Vegetable Mould Through The Action of Worms With Observations On Their Habits.‎

‎London: John Murray 1883. Ealry printing of Darwin's final work published shortly before his death. Octavo original cloth illustrated. In near fine condition Bookplate to the pastedown. A sharp example of this work by the leading mind in evolutionary biology. One of the most important figures in human history English naturalist geologist and biologist Charles Darwin became internationally renowned for his contributions to the science of evolution. He established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors and in a joint publication with Alfred Russel Wallace introduced his scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection in which the struggle for existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved in selective breeding. Darwin published his theory of evolution with compelling evidence in his 1859 book On the Origin of Species overcoming scientific rejection of earlier concepts of transmutation of species. By the 1870s the scientific community and much of the general public had accepted evolution as a fact. However many favored competing explanations and it was not until the emergence of the modern evolutionary synthesis from the 1930s to the 1950s that a broad consensus developed in which natural selection was the basic mechanism of evolution. Darwin's scientific discovery is the unifying theory of the life sciences explaining the diversity of life. Published in 1883 The Formation Of Vegetable Mould Through The Action of Worms covers in depth the important role of the earthworm on the constantly changing topsoil of the earth. ‎The Foundations of the Origin of Species‎

‎Cambridge: Printed at the University Press 1909. The evolution of evolution Limited presentation edition inscribed in a secretarial hand to Lucien Cuénot 1866-1951 a pioneering developer of Mendelian genetics and a skilled promoter of neo-Darwinism. These presentation copies were printed for delegates at the 1909 Darwin celebrations in Cambridge - marking the centenary of the man himself and the half-centenary of his most famous work. The Foundations marks Darwin's first articulation of the theory of evolution. Cuénot then professor of zoology at the University of Lorraine had been engaged in Mendelian experiments since the rediscovery of the latter's work in 1900. For this he is celebrated as the individual responsible for introducing genetics into Franc and for doing so in an essentially Darwinian framework. Darwin wrote the Foundations in mid-1842 drawing together a series of observations that had been fermenting since he stepped off the Beagle at Falmouth. As Francis Darwin observed the basic structure of the sketch resembles that of the Origin itself outlining the Malthusian mechanisms of natural selection and proceeding from analysis of domesticated organisms to those in a state of nature. Following Emma Darwin's death in 1896 the 35-page manuscript was discovered in a cupboard in Down House where it had been discarded as scrap paper. Francis Darwin who had co-authored several scientific works with his father edited the manuscript for presentation. Later in 1909 the University Press published a trade edition which paired Foundations with another previously unpublished "sketch" from 1844. Octavo. Photogravure portrait frontispiece with tissue guard photographic plate. Original quarter vellum grey paper covers front cover lettered and with university crest stamped in black outer and lower edges uncut. Light toning and bumping minimal foxing to contents: a very good copy indeed. Freeman 1555; Norman 605; Waller 10788. hardcover‎
