‎The Power of Movement in Plants‎

‎
FIRST ISSUE IN A HANDSOME BINDING
first edition first issue 8vo. 2 half-title & advt. x 592pp. 196 figures on text leaves handsome modern contemporary-style half light tan calf spine panelled by gilt-rolled raised bands large blind tool at panel centres red morocco label gilt old marbled paper on sides top edge gilt trivial old water stain at the extreme foot of the first few leaves. A nice copy.

Freeman Darwin Bibliography 1325. First issue with 2 lines of errata on page x.
"This was an extension of the work on climbing plants to show that the same mechanism holds good for flowering plants in general. It was another specialist book and seems to have sold fewer copies than any other and was not reprinted in England after the year of Darwin's death until modern facsimiles appeared of the first thousand in 1966 and the second in 1969.The first edition was published on November 6 1880 and it is recorded that 1500 copies were sold at Murray's autumn sale. It was in a standard green cloth binding and cost 15s. . In this issue there are two lines of errata on page x which are corrected in the second thousand of the same year. . In the third thousand of 1882 the last Murray printing the preface is slightly altered" Freeman p.161.
This work follows up on his earlier On the Movements and Habits of Climbing Plants 1865 and was based on experiments that he conducted with the assistance of his son Francis Darwin. On p.569-70 he suggests natural selection as a possible explanation for plants' ability to bend towards or away from environmental stimuli.
John Murray hardcover‎

‎Darwin, Charles Assisted by Francis Darwin‎

‎The Power of Movement in Plants‎

‎1880. London: John Murray 1880.

8vo x 592 32 ads dated May 1878 pp. Illustrated with 196 in-text woodcuts. Original green blind-stamped cloth backstrip titled in gilt brown coated endpapers hinges cracked a little wear to crown and foot of backstrip text block edges but not pages stained an unsophisticated copy.

§ § First edition first issue inscribed in Charles Darwin's hand "Elizabeth Darwin From her Father." Presentation copies from Darwin in his own hand are exceptionally rare most presentation copies were inscribed "from the author" by the publisher; a copy inscribed to a family member by Darwin himself is extraordinarily so.

Elizabeth Darwin known as Bessy was Charles and Emma Darwin's youngest daughter and perhaps the most enigmatic of all their ten children. She is remembered as a quiet soul who lived in the family home until the death of her mother and then in a cottage on her own near her three brothers until her death in 1926. The book which Darwin has inscribed to her was written with the assistance of her brother Francis who had himself become an accomplished botanist. It is an extension of Darwin's earlier work on movement in climbing plants showing that the same mechanisms hold true for flowering plants in general. It was well reviewed and immediately sold 1500 copies.

Darwin was an exceptionally affectionate father whose anxious feelings for his own children greatly spurred his study of inherited characteristics and of evolution. He and his wife Emma were first cousins a genetic liability that tormented him. This book written in partnership with one of his children and presented to another is a potent testament to the intertwining of scientific genius and fatherhood that so characterized Darwin and catalyzed his momentous career. Books inscribed by Darwin to his children are extremely rare on the market. The last such book at auction - a copy of The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex inscribed by Darwin to his daughter Henrietta who had edited the book - sold for £90000 at Sotheby's in 2015. unknown‎

‎The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs‎

‎New York: D. Appleton. 1897. 3rd authorised edition octavo original half-leather binding with marbled sides gilt lettering to spine top edge gilt three fold-out maps pp xx 344. Some scraping to the sides. Rubbing to the spine and the corners: the central area of the spine is significantly darkened. Internally clean. With the three fold-out maps two of which have coloured details and in excellent condition. Very good condition. First published in its original form as Darwin's first monograph under the title "The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs Being the first part of the geology of the voyage of the Beagle under the command of Capt. Fitzroy R.N. during the years 1832 to 1836" The monograph set out Darwin's theory of the formation of coral reefs and atolls. He extensively revised and rewrote the book for its 1874 second edition to take into account James Dwight Dana's 1872 publication 'Corals and Coral Islands' and work by Joseph Jukes. This is the third edition with Darwin's prefaces to the first and second edition and a preface to this edition by his son Francis Darwin. It also includes an appendix by the geologist Thomas George Bonney on the study of coral reefs since 1874. "The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs" remains an important landmark in the science of coral reefs and is relatively uncommon. Includes references to North-West coast of Australia and the Great Barrier Reef 3rd edition. Half leather. D. Appleton hardcover‎

Uncommon in the publisher's cloth.

During the course of the voyage of the Beagle 'Darwin's geological achievements mounted up. Using Charles Lyell's radical new Principles of Geology 1830–33 as a guide he grew bold in interpreting the earth's crust by causes now in operation. The first volume was a gift from FitzRoy the other two reached him during the voyage. He was captivated by Lyell's grand theoretical scheme - "when seeing a thing never seen by Lyell one yet saw it partially through his eyes" Correspondence 3.55 - and confirmed many of Lyell's observations with careful fieldwork. On other points Darwin expanded innovatively especially in understanding the piecemeal formation of the Andes and the origin of coral reefs on sinking mountain rims. There was an immediacy to it all. As he trekked through the Portillo and Uspallata passes of the Andes the coloured rocks seemed almost like a geological diagram and in the Cocos Keeling Islands he waded over the reefs to confirm his theory of the formation of coral atolls. His geology was dynamic with continents slowly rising and sea basins sinking and it formed the basis of all his later views. He endorsed Lyell's belief in an earth gradually shaped over countless ages: time enough - as he later grasped - for evolution by natural selection to occur' Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
Freeman 275. Minor creases to the folding plates. The top edge is a trifle dust stained with some mild foxing to the fore-edge. There is also a small bit of rubbing to the corners and tips. From the library of the esteemed American paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould 1941-2002. In his essay "Worm for a Century" from the collection Hen's Teeth and Horse's Teeth: Further Reflections in Natural History 1983 Gould argued that this Darwin's first book on a specific subject is essential to understanding his theoretical approach: "This book is about coral but it is also about historical reasoning. Vegetable mold formed fast enough to measure its rate directly; we capture the past by summing effects of small and observable present causes. But what if rates are too slow or scales too large to render history by direct observation of present processes For such cases we must develop a different method. Since large-scale processes begin at different times and proceed at diverse rates the varied stages of different examples should exist simultaneously in the present. To establish history in such cases we must construct a theory that will explain a series of present phenomena as stages of a single historical process. The method is quite general. Darwin used it to explain the formation of coral reefs. We invoke it today to infer the history of stars. D. Appleton and Company hardcover‎
