IT IS ALSO HIS LONGEST AND MOST DETAILED WORK" Freeman The Works of Charles Darwin 879. It is also "the only section of Darwin's big book on the origin of species which was printed in his lifetime and corresponding to its first two intended chapters" ibid. <br /> <br /> Darwin's intent was "to provide overwhelming evidence for the ubiquity of variation" Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. "This work is notable not only for Darwin's prodigious amassing of facts concerning artificial selection of traits to demonstrate an analogy for natural selection. It also advances his hypothesis of pangenesis and gemmules as the agents of the inheritance of characteristics" DSB.<br /> <br /> Darwin's hypothesis of pangenesis "here expounded for the first time" Freeman. Was the by "means of which he tried to frame an explanation of hereditary resemblance inheritance of acquired characters atavism and regeneration. It was a brave attempt to account for a number of phenomena which were beyond the bounds of scientific knowledge in his day such as fertilization by the union of sperm with egg the mechanism of chromosomal inheritance and the development of the embryo by successive cell division. His hypothesis of pangenesis could not therefore give a permanently acceptable account of the multitude of phenomena it was designed to explain. It was however a point of departure for particulate theories of inheritance in the latter nineteenth century' DSB Freeman. "Other chapters consider "the amount and nature of the changes which animals or plants have undergone whilst under man's dominion" employing observations of inheritance within a species in an effort to understand the causes of variability" ibid. <br /> <br /> While as said Darwin's two volumes "were intended to provide overwhelming evidence for the ubiquity of variation" they also "incidentally answered Lyell and Gray who maintained that variations had not occurred purely by chance but were providentially directed. Darwin showed that breeders indeed selected from a vast array of minute random variations. He gave numerous instances of the causes of variability including the direct effect of the conditions of life reversion the effects of use and disuse saltation prepotency and correlated growth" Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. Intended originally as the first two chapters of a monumental work that Darwin envisioned but never published on the origin of species not the Origin of 1859 which Darwin viewed as only an abstract of a more substantial project. This second edition substantially revised and enlarged from the first edition of 1868 is the final text in which Darwin proposed the concept of pangenesis his provisional hypothetical mechanism for heredity which was proven obsolete by the 1900 rediscovery of Mendel's theory of the particulate nature of inheritance and in which he detailed and discussed at length artificial selection. Milton and Stanley Slotkin in each volume ownership signature on the title to Volume II. First edition first issue of Darwin's great contribution to the descent theory and the foundation on which all later racial-biological research was based. This work expands in detail material that Darwin had intended to include in his Origin. The most novel element in the work is Darwin's hypothesis of pangenesis by which he attempts to explain hereditary resemblance inheritance of acquired characteristics atavism and regeneration. Although proven invalid this theory was nevertheless of prime importance in the history of genetics. "Darwin carried out numerous investigations with pigeons and various plants. Pp. xvi 300; 38 woodcuts in text. Publisher's original forest-green cloth lettered in gilt on the spine and stamped in blind along the outer borders of the front and rear covers 8vo. This is Darwin's primary work on plant fertilization. Darwin was keenly interested in the morphology of orchids and how these structures enticed insects to fertilize them. This is Freeman 814; there are only eight John Murray entries in Freeman for "Fertilisation of Orchids." Far fewer copies of this Darwin title were printed by Murray compared with his other titles. Lettered ruled and with ornaments in gilt to the spine. 32 pp. of publisher's advertisements dated "December 1861" bound in at the rear Freeman notes that the inserted adverts in this edition "may be as late as September 1868". Illustrated with 11 black and white wood engravings and diagrams throughout the text. All edges untrimmed. A very good copy the binding square and firm with minor abrasion rubbing and some nicking to the spine tips and mild fraying to the outer hinges the lower portions of the gilt ruling a little worn. Front inner hinge partially cracked but holding. The contents with a previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown a faded ink signature to the front endpaper a small square of adhesive residue c. 2 x 2.5 cm visible to the lower edge of the rear pastedown due to removal of the original binder's label are otherwise clean with just a little light spotting to the prelims and final leaves. Charles Darwin's first published book now universally known as 'The Voyage of the Beagle' but not issued with that title until 1905 is as Richard Freeman notes in his bibliography of the author "undoubtedly the most often read and stands second only to 'On the Origin of Species' as the most often printed". Darwin's account of his travels aboard HMS Beagle between 1831 and 1836 has an appropriately circuitous bibliographical history. It was first issued as the third volume of three of 'The narrative of the voyages of H. M. Ships Adventure and Beagle' 1839 edited by Robert Fitzroy Captain of the Beagle; Darwin's volume simply titled 'Journal and remarks 1832-1836' was also reissued alone the same year. A second edition followed in 1845 as 'Journal or researches into the natural history and geology of the countries visited during the voyage of H. M. S. Beagle round the world .' but it is this 1860 edition described by Freeman as the "Final definitive text" that became the template for the countless editions that followed. Darwin provided new preliminaries and a postscript dated Feb. 1st 1860 outlining changes and corrections made to the text. The work itself a groundbreaking fusion of travel narrative and scientific fieldwork is as Freeman notes"an important travel book in its own right" as well as its significance "in relation to the background of Darwin's evolutionary ideas". The green cloth binding for the 1860 edition is notable for being identical to that of the first three editions of 'On the Origin of Species'. Freeman 20.
