He is enclosing 'a Lecture Syllabus from Mr. Nicol whom you may perhaps remember having seen meet me in the committee room on the day of my lecture'. Nicols wants Romanes to recommend him as a lecturer but he only knows him 'from his book "Zoological Notes" which I reviewed in Nature. It was a good book & an entertaining one but I know nothing of his capabilities as a lecturer.' Brossura editoriale con titolo impresso in nero al piatto anteriore (una piccola abrasione sottile che tocca una lettera del testo). Interessante studio a carattere geologico-archeologico-evoluzionistico-zoologico (con particolare interesse ai fossili ed alla loro origine), scritto da Francesco Gasco, originario di Mondovì da famiglia di Savigliano, professore di Anatomia Comparata ma celebre anche per i suoi studi di zoologia e la raccolta di numerosi esemplari prelevati duranti i suoi numerosi viaggi e considerato fra i padri dell'evoluzionismo italiano. L'autore dimostrò un precoce interesse per i fenomeni naturali che si esprimeva con la ricerca e raccolta di insetti, conchiglie e piante. Nel 1861 ottenne per concorso un posto gratuito nel Collegio delle provincie di Torino; si iscrisse poi alla facoltà di scienze naturali laureandosi nel 1865 con una tesi sul sistema digerente nella serie animale.Studente prediletto del grade Panceri studiò, inseieme a questi, gli organi luminosi delle Pennatule e partecipò alla stesura del catalogo delle Collezioni zootomiche, rimasto inedito. Con il Panceri il G. fece un primo viaggio in Egitto nel 1873, a cui seguì un secondo nel 1874, con destinazione Assuan, insieme con molti altri studiosi tra cui ancora il Panceri e A. Costa (Viaggio in Egitto dei soci P. Panceri e F. G., in Annuario dell'Associazione dei naturalisti e medici per la mutua istruzione per gli anni 1875-76, pp. 49-180). Durante la permanenza in Egitto il G. si dedicò allo studio degli effetti del veleno di un ragno e di alcune specie di serpenti sugli Uccelli e sui Mammiferi.Nel 1877 il G. vinse la cattedra di zoologia e anatomia comparata all'Università di Genova, e qui si occupò anche del Museo zoologico che arricchì di nuovi reperti fra cui lo scheletro di una balenottera arenatasi a Monterosso in Liguria; contemporaneamente pubblicò una relazione, iniziata a Napoli, su una balena arenatasi a Taranto nel febbraio del 1877 che identificò nella balena dei Baschi, Balaena Biscajensis (euglacialis). Nel 1882 il G. passò all'insegnamento della zoologia e dell'anatomia comparata all'Università di Roma e nel 1885 tenne il discorso di apertura dell'anno accademico su Influenza della biologia sul pensiero moderno (Roma 1886); fu quella la prima volta che all'Università di Roma si parlò ufficialmente di evoluzione. Buon esemplare non comune.
