L'area metropolitana napoletana, in particolare, con i suoi tre milioni di abitanti e più, rientra nel modello delle megalopoli, gravate dalla miseria dei poveri, dagli iperconsumi dei ricchi, dall'incertezza globale e dalle problematiche connesse allo smaltimento dei rifiuti. Utilizzando l'informazione circolante, il volume ricostruisce la rete d'interessi e di responsabilità, le indagini della magistratura, i conflitti tra gli stakeholder e le proteste dei cittadini. La vicenda mostra come alle grandi narrazioni politiche del secolo scorso si siano sostituite, oggi, le narrazioni mediatiche ed è esemplare del mutamento dei rapporti tra giornalismo oggettivo finanziato dagli editori e giornalismo autoprodotto e partecipativo, reso possibile da Internet.
