Letter of 2 April 1822; on letterhead of the Conseil royal de l'Instruction publique. Engraving undated circa 1840. Letter: Folio 30.5 x 20 cm 1 p. Bifolium with text on recto of first leaf and address with several postmarks on reverse of second. Five lines. Text clear and complete with good clear signature. Fair on aged and lightly-creased paper with 1.5 cm closed tear in top left-hand corner not affecting text. The 'Objet de la lettre' is given as 'Envoi d'un Brevet de Pension'. The pension will be paid 'par la Caisse d'Amortissement'. Engraving: Original on paper 24 x 15.5 cm. Captioned 'G. CUVIER.' A good clear impression on grubby spotted and lightly-creased paper. in French with translation sending her "the tickets for entry to the Museum of Natural History" at the Jardin du Roi in Paris now the Jardin des Plantes and saying "each ticket can be used for 4 persons" no place 1 side 8vo Friday 12th January light brown mark touching a short part of three lines all perfectly legible Translation Monsieur Cuvier has the honour to send Madame Campbell the tickets for entry to the Museum of Natural History for which she asked each ticket can be used for 4 persons. Friday 12th January 1826. Cuvier's Animal Kingdom 1817 classified living and fossil animals by their structure and his geological researches were summed up in his Revolutions of the Surface of the Globe 1825. In 1808 Napoleon appointed him President of the National University and he worked for public education all his life. unknown

Petit manque de cuir sur la coiffe supérieure, dorure légèrement passée sur les lettres de l'auteur et du titre sur le dos, quelques pâles rousseurs par endroits. Exemplaire bien complet de cet intéressant document.

Cuvier the great naturalist and Lutheran who managed to reconcile his beliefs in the Bible with his scientific findings. His work was extremely popular with Christian evangelists in the English-speaking world. This fine letter demonstrates his committment to his religion:<br/><br/>"L'esperance de pouvoir être utile aux protestants dans les fonctions qui viennent de m'être confiées est le seul motif qui me les ait fait accepter. Je serai charmé de m'entretenir avec Messieurs du consistoire sur ce que votre communion peut avoir à désirer. Je regrette seulement d'avoir à leur proposer un voyage aussi long que celui du jardin du Roi mais c'est le seul endroit ou je puisse les recevoir commodement."<br/><br/>English translation: "My only motive for accepting the duties which have just been conferred on me is the hope that I can be of some use to protestants.
