The work constitutes the first serious attempt to provide an extensive classified description of mammals: "L'ouvrage que nous publions tait depuis long-temps reconnu necessaire et demand par les naturalistes. L'existence d'un tres-grand nombre d'espces de Mammifres ne reposait que sur des notes imparfaites ou sur de simples phrases caractristiques et la plupart des figures qu'on pouvait citer l'appui des autres taient in correctes. Nos dessins representant chaque animal dans une attitude simple et toujours de profil. et nous aurons soin de donner une figure de face toutes les fois qu'il sera necessaire de voir ainsi les animaux pour les mieux juger." A unique proof printing with several corrections by Brongniart. See DSB: "In 1804 wanting to place the Montmartre bed of fossil formations in time Cuvier with Brongniart began research that led to G�ographie min�ralogique des environs de Paris 1808 1811 which was rewritten and greatly expanded as Description g�ologique des environs de Paris 1822 1835. In this work a landmark in the history of geology Cuvier played a lesser role. Brongniart did the necessary fieldwork drawing his inspiration from the works of Buffon Soulavie Ramond Palassu especially Lamarck; the latter had described the fossil invertebrates of the Paris region and in his Hydrog�ologie 1802 had set forth the bases of the theory of "current causes" later developed by Constant Pr�vost. Cuvier respecting the short chronology of the Bible was forced to assume in addition to "current causes" which act very slowly rapid catastrophes and global upheavals which had no basis in fact". This proof was based upon the 1808 text published in the Annales du Mus�um d'Histoire naturelle volume XI pp. 293-326. We have added a few pages in photocopy of the final text for comparison. Later uniform navy buckram with gilt lettered spines. The rare large paper issue of the most important iconography on fishes published in the 19th century if not of all time. The work is usually found in 8vo with either plain or coloured plates. "Nearly all that was known about fishes during the first half of the nineteenth century was summarized by Georges L�opold Chr�tien Fr�d�ric Dagobert Cuvier 1769-1832 and his pupil and successor Achille Valenciennes 1794-1865 in the monumental 'Histoire Naturelle des Poissons'. . It contains descriptions of 4514 nominal species the greater portion approximately two-thirds written by Valenciennes after the death of Cuvier in 1832" T. W. Pietsch. Nevertheless Cuvier remained quoted as co-author. The preface of volume 9 contains Cuvier's eulogy by Valenciennes. ".To-day the work of Cuvier and Valenciennes is indispensable to systematic ichthyology . In many parts of the world people assisted Cuvier with notes manuscripts and particularly specimens. For many years the Jardin des Plantes was the center where all ichthyological materials were deposited. Thus Cuvier was able to bring together the richest and largest contemporary collection of fishes. Althogether his vast communication network huge world-wide collections and extensive ichthyological library made Paris the center of ichthyology and Cuvier the foremost ichthyologist in the world." The plates are in the realm of the very best ever made; no ichthyological work equals the delicacy of colouring and precision of engraving. The plates of volumes 19 and 20 are not coloured; those in volume 6 are on smaller sheets mounted to match; the smaller plate 245 is probably from another octavo copy. This posthumously published and much improved work contains fine engravings by Gu�rin Travi�s and Pr�tre with a total of 464 figures as well as descriptive text. The number LXXI on the title page is not correct. This has been corrected on the front board which is dated 1870 instead of 1869. Plain copy.
