La storia di Camillo Golgi è anche e soprattutto una storia di antagonismo intellettuale in quella disciplina - la biologia del cervello - che agli albori del secolo scorso era ancora agli esordi. Inventore di una tecnica pionieristica che permise per la prima volta di osservare le cellule del cervello, Golgi si trovò poi a condividere una teoria sulla struttura dei neuroni che si rivelò, alla prova dei fatti, profondamente errata. Fu il suo brillante rivale spagnolo Santiago Ramón y Cajal, con la teoria del neurone, e utilizzando proprio la tecnica della «reazione nera» messa a punto nel suo laboratorio di Pavia, a smentirlo e a prevalere in una combattuta querelle, tanto da diventare il paradigma fondamentale delle neuroscienze. A entrambi, nel 1906, fu assegnato il premio Nobel per la medicina, ma la vittoria di Golgi si tinse presto dei colori della beffa. Paolo Mazzarello, nel tracciare un'accurata biografia scientifica, ci restituisce l'identità storica perduta di questo grande ricercatore, a cui dobbiamo alcune delle più entusiasmanti scoperte nell'ambito della biologia alla base della moderna concezione del cervello e della cellula, e che ha aperto la strada all'esplorazione microscopica del substrato anatomico del pensiero.
