Despite the visual defects this is a tightly bound copy text little worn inscribed by the author in pencil "Washington Townsend with the respects of his aged Friend Wm. ‎pp. 598 + Colored Map. XLib. (withdrawn). Some foxing and damp stain. Original full leather binding. Front board and spine almost detached. Early ownership of J.G. Getchell. William Darlington (1782-1863) was a Chester County physician and botanist, and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from PA. He became a botanist at an early age, studied medicine, and graduated from the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia in 1804. He went to the East Indies as ship's surgeon in 1806. He returned to West Chester in 1807 and was a practicing physician there for a number of years. He raised a company of volunteers at the beginning of the War of 1812 and was major of a volunteer regiment. Darlington was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Fourteenth Congress; the Sixteenth; and the Seventeenth Congresses. He was appointed canal commissioner in 1825, and served as president of the West Chester Railroad. He established a natural history society in West Chester in 1826 and published several significant works on botany and natural history. Sabin 18596. The best edition. PA22‎

‎Les travaux de Darwin sur la biologie de la reproduction ont été un point de départ crucial pour de nombreuses études sur les interactions plantes- pollinisateurs ainsi que sur les systèmes de reproduction. Les études minutieuses menées par le naturaliste sur les relations des végétaux avec leur environnement ont ouvert la porte à de nouvelles disciplines comme l'écologie, la phytogéographie ou la phylogénie. La théorie darwinienne rend intelligible la systématique végétale, lui donne un sens nouveau en dévoilant les relations de parenté existant entre les différents groupes botaniques et en suggérant une histoire évolutive de ces groupes à partir d'un ancêtre commun. L'oeuvre de Darwin a transformé la botanique initialement descriptive en une science évolutionniste.‎

‎8vo., Second Edition, with 13 woodcuts in the text, neat contemporary signature on front free endpaper verso; handsomely bound in early twentieth century half calf BY MUDIE, marbled boards, back with five raised bands ruled in gilt, second compartment with leather label lettered and ruled in gilt, third compartment with author's name in gilt, all other compartments tooled in gilt with a floral spray, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers, backstrip faded (but all gilt just legible) else a most attractive copy of a scarce work. The binding is signed on front free endpaper verso. The publisher's catalogue sometimes found at end has not been bound with this copy. The first printing of the first edition was in Vol. IX of the Journal of the Linnean Society of London (dated 1867 but issued in 1865). The present edition, the first in book form, is greatly revised and enlarged; Freeman notes that 1500 copies were printed. The woodcut illustrations are by George Darwin, the author's son. SCARCE.
