POULSEN Axel Dalberg.
Etlingera of Borneo
Kota Kinabalu 2006. Very well illus large 8vo pp x 263 rear flap of dustwrapper folded otherwise a very good copy. An excellent new monograph on this ginger genus. Borneo is one of the most exciting places to study the richness of plant life on Earth and home to more than 300 ginger species. Etlingera is among the most diverse and attractive of the genera found there; several species are used as food spice medicine ornamentals or for other purposes and it therefore becomes crucial to be able to identify them. The present revision treats 42 taxa including 16 new species one new subspecies one new variety and one new combination. This more than doubles the number of species since modern careful revision was begun by Rosemary M. Smith 20 years ago. The first chapters of the book give an introduction to the genus including its taxonomic history morphology ecology uses and conservation. Local names and uses by the peoples of Borneo emphasize the great potential that the genus Etlingera offers for the future. A key is provided to the identification of the species; most are described in detail and illustrated by beautiful colour photographs and line drawings. The first descriptions and illustrations of the fruits of several species are also provided and show the importance of fruit characters for identification. The meanings of the scientific plant names are explained the conservation status of each species is assessed notes are added on ecology uses and history and a distribution map is given. The book will be of interest to botanists horticulturists and ethnobotanists. . Pictorial laminated boards. New/New. Hardcover

Gingers of Sarawak. A Pocket Guide
Kota Kinabalu 2006. Well illustrated 12mo pp iv 102 paperback a very good copy. A useful addition to the literature of this increasingly popular family. Sarawak is one of the most exciting place to study the richness of plant life and home to more than 150 gingers the majority of which are found only in Borneo. Several species are useful as food spice medicine ornamentals or other purposes. At the same time the ginger family is poorly studied by botanists and many more species still remain to be discovered in the forests of Sarawak. This pocket guide provides a wealth of information including colour photographs of some the most stunning or typical ginger species in Sarawak. All 18 ginger genera known from Sarawak are examplified by at least one species. The meaning of the scientific plant names are explained and also local names are included. Each of the 64 selected species are described briefly and notes are added on their ecology uses or history. This pocket guide also presents a checklist of the 150 species currently known in Sarawak and an overview of the literature for their identification. The booklet will be of interest to plant lovers botany and forestry students horticulturists eco-tourists staff in national parks and nature guides as well as people interest in natural resources of Borneo.
