‎BALLEYDIER DE HELL (Augustin).‎

‎Album Jacquard.

1 vol. in-folio (355 x 290 mm) of: 100 lithographed plates includind engraved title with portrait of Jacquard and 99 lithographed plates in color captioned with their scientific name and origin. (Copy bound without a dedication page sometimes present, some copies seem to have 101 plates including the title). Contemporary half red chagrin, spine ribbed, decorated and titled, boards covered with brown marbled paper, speckled edges, combed marbled paper endpapers. Very rare alguier composed of lithographs reproducing marine plants used as models for Jacquard weaving designs, as well as for various products presented at the 1855 Paris Exposition Universelle organized under the patronage of Empress Eugénie and Emperor Napoléon III; specimens collected on the shores of Europe, the Mediterranean and the Middle East, assembled and printed from photograms by botanist Augustin Balleydier de Hell as part of a 12-year project. The Jacquard loom is a programmable mechanical loom developed in the 19th century by Joseph Marie Charles Jacquard (1752-1834) to make it faster and easier to weave colorful, intricately patterned fabrics, which until then had almost always been woven by hand. Its predecessor was the pull loom, which required the intervention of a weaver's assistant. Prior to the invention of the Jacquard loom, people were looking for a way to replace the blade puller on the tire loom. A number of interested parties helped to advance research in this direction. Finally, in 1801, Jacquard proposed a mechanism that would enable complex designs to be woven without manual assistance. Our "Flore des dessinateurs" consists of 100 lithographs featuring one or more specimens, each printed in a different tone, with the scientific name of each alga and its origin indicated. The perfection of the image of the algae, obtained using the photogram process, is spectacularly realistic for its time: "In the case of the herbarium: the object is presented directly, flat without perspective, and the photograms of the algae are thus herbarium-like: the object is flat and seems to be recorded without deformation. But the herbarium, with its typological rigor, also concerns the decorator and the artist. Augustin Balleydier de Hell in the 1850s comes to mind. A wealthy amateur botanist and philanthropist, he had a passion for seaweed and marine plants, which he saw as sources of motifs for decorating fabrics and industrial products. He produced albums that he gave to manufacturers as models for their designers. [La couleur des algues, Art et Botanique by Corinne Feïss-Jehel and Pierre-Jérôme Jehel, École de l'image des Goblins, 2022]. Balleydier dedicates his book to the Marquis de la Rochejacquelin. He presented a project for a "universal, historical, chronological and comparative museum of manufactured fabrics" at the Louvre during the 1855 Universal Exhibition. The lithographs of his "flore" were reproduced from his albums, which he made available to French manufacturers as models for their designers. In this way, he offered nearly one hundred thousand plants to artists. The work opens with a blue lithographed title featuring arches containing armories, landscapes, plants and a portrait of J. Jacquard surmounted by the motto: "Jacquard's shuttle is to the factory what Turenne's sword is to the army". The plates, whose numbering and order are erratic like the rare copies preserved in public collections, bear the lower left signature of Augustin Balleydier de Hell. Our passionate herbalist of algae and marine plants presents here samples from the Mediterranean, the Atlantic coast, the English Channel, the North Sea, the Adriatic, the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf and the Indian Sea. Some of the specimens reproduced: Conferva Nigra (France), Ulva Coecina (Brighton England), Fucus Articulatus (Ireland), Cecilia Riv (Red Sea), Fucus Coecinus (Indian Sea), Spongiosus Polypus (Persian Gulf), Polypus Gorganus ( Algiers), Rupestris (Italy), Fucus Revularis (France), Fucus Bifidus (Genoa), Fucus Palmatus (Spain), Fucus Amelinus (Suez), Polypus Hoisterus (Scotland), Ulva Exigua (Boulogne sur Mer), Kaliformis (Red Sea), Fucus Seratus (Venice), Polypus (Malta), Spongiosus Arbor (Ostend)Plypus Spongiosus (Adriatic)... Two two-tone plates depict starfish. Provenance: Philippe Joseph Henri Lemaire born January 8, 1798 in Valenciennes (Nord) and died August 2, 1880 in Paris, was a French sculptor and politician (inscription on tail in gilded letters "1858, E. David, à son oncle H. Lemaire, député du nord"). A superb copy, preserved in its attractive original binding, of this rare marine flora, absent from most public or private collections.‎
