Hales Stephen
Statical Essays Containing Vegetable Staticks or an account of some statical experiments on the sap in vegetables : being an essay towards a natural history of vegetation
At the West-End of St Paul's London: W. Innys & R. Manby 1738. Third edition with amendments. Small octavo pp xiv 376 illustrated with 18 engraved plates fore-edge a little thumbed but otherwise very clean and crisp internally marbled endpapers contemporary full polished calf a thin decorated gilt line around the borders a little marked and worn the spine gilt decorated with raised bands lacking the top 25mm of the spine and lacking small portions at the top of each joint the joints cracking slightly. still an attractive copy. In Vegetable Staticks Hales studied transpiration - the loss of water from the leaves of plants. He estimated the surface area of the leaves of the plant and the length and surface area of the roots. This allowed Hales to compare the calculated influx of water into the plant with the amount of water leaving the plant by transpiration through the leaves. He also measured 'the force of the sap' or root pressure. Hales commented that "plants very probably draw through their leaves some part of their nourishment from the air". He prefigured the cohesion theory of water movement in plants although his ideas were not understood at the time so he did not influence the debate on water transport in plants in the 19th century. He also speculated that plants might use light as a source of energy for growth i.e. photosynthesis based on Isaac Newtons suggestion that "gross bodies and light" might be interconvertible. He also describes experiments that showed that "air freely enters plants not only with the principal fund of nourishment by the roots but also thro the surface of their trunks and leaves". While Hales work on the chemistry of air appears primitive by modern standards its importance was acknowledged by Antoine Lavoisier the discoverer of oxygen. Hales invention of the pneumatic trough to collect gases over water is also considered a major technical advance. Modified forms of the pneumatic trough were later used by William Brownrigg Henry Cavendish and Joseph Priestley in their research. Blanche Henrey 779. Full-Leather. Good. W. Innys & R. Manby Hardcover

Statical Essays I: Vegetable Staticks; or an account of some Statical Experiments on the Sap in Vegetables. Also . . . an Attempt to analyse the Air by a great Variety of Chymio-Statical Experiments. - II: Statical Essays: containing haemastatic
London: for W. Innys and R. Manby and T. Woodward 1731. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall. 1731 6 viii 4 376 pp. 19 engraved plates by S. Gribelin Vol. I; 1733 xxii 26 361 23 pp. Vol. II. 8vo 19.5x12.5cm. Interior browned Vol. II with the leaf before the title announcing the Royal Society's authorisation of publication some dampstaining to the end. Ownership inscription H. Pemberton on flyleaf of Vol. 1. Contemporary full calfs rebacked. PMM 189 Horblit 45b. - FIRST EDITION of Vol. 2 and SECOND EDITION of vol. 1. Hales applied his training in biology and mathematics including physics to make important scientific investigations presented in these separately published volumes. The first volume Vegetable staticks Hales describes his investigations of plant physiology including the movement of water in plants and determining the three factors of water movement: root suction root pressure and leaf suction. He also established that plants lose water continuously during transpiration through leaves. His quantitative measurements of these phenomena enabled him to show the rate of transpiration varied with temperature. Hales established that plants do not have true circulation system and developed techniques of measuring the varying growth rates in different plant structures. The second volume or Haemastaticks 'contains the studies on blood pressure which make Hales one of the founders of modern experimental physiology. The application of the principle of the pressure-gauge or manometer enabled him to measure blood pressure during the contraction of the heart. He computed the circulation rate and estimated the velocity of the blood in the veins arteries and capillary vessels and by showing that the capillary vessels are liable to constriction and dilation he made an important contribution both to the study of physiology and the practice of the physician of today . Hales' work marked the greatest advance in the physiology of the circulation between Harvey and the introduction of the mercury manometer and other instruments for the measurement of blood pressure by J.L.M. Poiseuille in 1828' PMM. for W. Innys and R. Manby, and T. Woodward hardcover

HALL BONNIE; EDITED BY JAMES D. HALL WITH A FOREWORD BY ROBERT MICHAEL PYLE
Ever Blooming: The Art Of Bonnie Hall
Oregon State University Press Corvallis: 2005. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. After a long and accomplished career in scientific illustration Bonnie Hall turned with wonder and determination to the art of screenprinting. Resolved to "share the privileged close scrutiny of nature" that she had enjoyed Hall created her first screenprint in 1992 while undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer. Over the next 12 years she created screenprints of Pacific Northwest wildflowers ferns and butterflies-natural history portraits in simple sharp-edged planes of brilliant color. Inspired by old botanical prints and motivated by a desire to draw attention to "the overlooked undervalued or threatened wild things native to our Pacific Northwest landscape" Hall produced scientifically accurate prints that revealed the personality life stages and the very essence of her subjects-what a fellow artist aptly called the "gesture" of each plant. Ever Blooming collects the 33 large serigraphs and five smaller ferns that Hall created in the last years of her life along with the artist's own text describing each plant and butterfly. Her narratives are rich in detail and informed by thorough study into plant distribution life histories use by Native Americans taxonomic discoveries and conservation issues. Taken as a whole the work is a sparkling confluence of science and art. For botanists wildflower enthusiasts gardeners and artists as well as anyone who loves the Pacific Northwest wilderness Ever Blooming offers a singular glimpse of the natural world as seen through the eyes of a gifted and inspired artist. 9 9 inches full color 104 pages. "Bonnie Hall and her exquisite art created one of the loveliest gardens ever grown of our region's floral treasures. From violets to shooting stars fritillarias to ferns and a bursting bouquet of irises Bonnie captured the color form and personality of Northwest flowers with the simplicity of Henry Evans and the exuberance of a Dutch Master's still life. As a beautiful bonus splendid portraits of five special Northwest butterflies linger among the wildflowers they love. Bonnie Hall's wildflowers are her great gift to us all-long may they bloom!" -Robert Michael Pyle Oregon State University Press, Corvallis: 2005 hardcover
