‎Edition originale de cet ouvrage important qui décrit près de 1300 espèces de plantes recueillies en Europe, près de Montpellier, en Suisse, aux Pays-Bas mais aussi en Afrique et en Amérique. On y découvre des représentations de cactus, mais aussi la première illustration, publiée dans un livre anglais, de tabac, "Indorum Sana Sancta, sive Nicotiana Gallorum", accompagnée de la tête d'un homme fumant une espèce de pipe. L'exemplaire est bien complet avec plus de 270 bois gravés dans le texte, dont les 5 bois additionnels (3 insérés sur onglets à la suite des feuillets A5, C4 et N3 et 2 collés sur les feuillets X6v et 2L2v). Médecins et botanistes, le provençal Pierre Pena (1535-1611) et le flamand Mathias de l'Obel (1538-1616) se sont connus à l'université de Montpellier, où Lobel fut l'élève de Guillaume Rondelet. La longue notice contenue dans la "Bibliotheca Belgica" décrit le beau titre gravé : "Dans la partie supérieure du titre gravé, le firmament d'après le système de Ptolémée : les 7 épicycles indiquant les orbites de la Lune, de Mercure, de Vénus, du Soleil, de Mars, de Jupiter et de Saturne ; l'épicycle extérieur, tout étoilé indique le ciel. A la place occupée, dans ce système, par la Terre, se trouvent les armoiries de la reine Elisabeth, accompagnées, à gauche de la rose, emblème de la maison de Lancastre, dont Elisabeth était issue, et à droite d'une herse, laquelle fait peut-être allusion à l'aplanissement des dissensions entre les maisons de Lancastre et d'Yorck et à la fin des guerres sanglantes des deux roses [...]. Au-dessous, quelques nues d'où tombe la pluie. Au coin gauche supérieur, le monogramme et les emblèmes de Math. de l'Obel [... ]et au coin droit les emblèmes de Pierre Pena [... ]. La plus grande partie des plantes décrites dans ce recueil sont nouvelles, et beaucoup d'entre elles avaient été découvertes par les auteurs eux-mêmes [ ... ]" (Bibliotheca Belgica, XXI, 47 s.). Exemplaire provenant de la bibliothèque d'Alidor Delzant, qui fut notamment l'exécuteur testamentaire d'Edmond de Goncourt et de Paul de Saint-Victor. Bon état (reliure frottée avec manques de cuir en coiffes, et fente partielle en mors, sans la première garde volante, ex-libris gravé en garde, annotations comptables anciennes en seconde garde volante, qq. rares annotations au crayon et qq. petites mouillures, bon exemplaire par ailleurs). Nissen, BBI, 1502 ; Pritzel, 7029 - First edition of this important work which describes nearly 1300 species of plants collected in Europe, near Montpellier, in Switzerland, in the Netherlands but also in Africa and America. It contains representations of cacti, but also the first picture of tobacco published in a English book, that of Nicotiana tabacum, with an engraving for "Indorum Sana Sancta, sive Nicotiana Gallorum", accompanied by the head of a man smoking a kind of pipe (Hoeniger, The Development of Natural History in Tudor England, 74). The copy is complete with more than 270 woodcuts in the text, including the 5 additional woodcuts (3 inserted on tabs following leaves A5, C4 and N3 and 2 pasted on leaves X6v and 2L2v). Doctors and botanists, the Provençal Pierre Pena (1535-1611) and the Flemish Mathias de l'Obel (1538-1616) met at the University of Montpellier, where Lobel was a student of Guillaume Rondelet. The long notice contained in the "Bibliotheca Belgica" describes the beautiful engraved title (our translation) : "In the upper part of the engraved title, the firmament according to the Ptolemaic system: the 7 epicycles indicating the orbits of the Moon, Mercury, Venus, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn; the outer epicycle, all starry, indicates the sky. In the place occupied, in this system, by the Earth, are the coat of arms of Queen Elizabeth, accompanied, on the left by the rose, emblem of the house of Lancaster, from which Elizabeth was descended, and on the right by a portcullis, which perhaps alludes to the smoothing of the dissensions between the houses of Lancaster and York and to the end of the bloody wars of the two roses [...]. Below, some clouds from which rain falls. In the upper left corner, the monogram and emblems of Math. de l'Obel [... ] and in the right corner the emblems of Pierre Pena [...]. Most of the plants described in this collection are new, and many of them had been discovered by the authors themselves [...]" (Bibliotheca Belgica, XXI, 47 s.). Copy from the library of Alidor Delzant, who was notably the executor of the will of Edmond de Goncourt and Paul de Saint-Victor. Good condition (binding rubbed with lack of leather at the top and bottom of the spine, partial split at the joint, without the first flyleaf, engraved bookplate at the flyleaf, old annotations at the second flyleaf, some rare pencil annotations and some small waterstains, otherwise a good copy).
