‎A New List of the Flowering Plants and Ferns Growing Wild in the County of Devon with supplement Variant issue‎

‎London Ilfracombe & Torquay: Bosworth & Harrison 1860. Small octavo pp viii 92 ii 93-108 very clean internally recently bound in simple boards with paper title label on the spine a very good copy. This copy is a curiosity of edition and pagination. The original work of 1860 seems to extend always to 92 pages. Our copy has an extra errata leaf unpaginated. This is then followed by a supplement paginated 93-108. Freeman 1325 mentions that the supplement was re-issued with the Flora and dated 1872. David McClintock's copy see Maggs Brothers Catalogue 1337 confirms the date as 1872 and comments "the author explains in his preface that he had 300 copies of the first edition left so he gave them a new title and added an 18pp supplement". But our copy definitely is the first printing and with a 16pp supplement. I offer no explanation !! But certainly in whatever form the supplement is rare. First Edition. Boards. Very Good. ‎Observations Topographical Moral & Physiological; Made in a Journey Through part of the Low-Countries Germany Italy and France: with a Catalogue of Plants not Native of England found Spontaneously growing in those Parts and their Virtues‎

‎The Bell in St Paul's Churchyard: John Martyn 1673. Illustrated with three engraved folding plates an engraved portrait one engraving within the text small thick octavo pp xiii i 499 i title to the Catalogus Stirpium v i 115 with the errata leaf lacking the title page which is supplied in an old-style photo copy the plates are a little browned and creased and one is splitting along the fold some age-toning and signs of use throughout signs of damp damage to the lower margins throughout with some pages frayed and flaking very slight loss of text to about fifteen pages bound in a recent very simple full calf no title to the spine. A good working copy of a very scarce title. John Ray FRS 1627 - 1705 was an English naturalist widely regarded as one of the earliest of the English parson-naturalists. His classification of plants in his Historia Plantarum was an important step towards modern taxonomy. Ray rejected the system of dichotomous division by which species were classified according to a pre-conceived type system and instead classified plants according to similarities and differences that emerged from observation. He was among the first to attempt a biological definition for the concept of species. In the spring of 1663 Ray started together with Willughby and two other pupils Philip Skippon and Nathaniel Bacon on a tour through Europe from which he returned in March 1666 parting from Willughby at Montpellier whence the latter continued his journey into Spain. He had previously in three different journeys 1658 1661 1662 travelled through the greater part of Great Britain. But from this Continental tour Ray and Willughby returned laden with collections on which they meant to base complete systematic descriptions of the animal and vegetable kingdoms. Willughby undertook the former part but dying in 1672 left only an ornithology and ichthyology for Ray to edit; while Ray used the botanical collections for the groundwork of his Methodus plantarum nova 1682 and his great Historia generalis plantarum 3 vols. 1686 1688 1704. The plants gathered on his British tours had already been described in his Catalogus plantarum Angliae 1670 which formed the basis for later English floras. . First Edition. Full Leather. Fair. ‎Synopsis Methodica Stirpium Britannicarum. Editio Tertia.‎

‎Londini: Gulielmi & Joannis Innys 1724. Third edition. Illustrated with 24 fine engraved plates of which two are folding small thick octavo pp 28 482 30 4-page bookseller's catalogue Blanche Henrey points out that page numbers 281-288 are repeated a printer's error a few very slight marks or paper imperfections but generally a remarkably clean bright and tight copy the front hinge is cracked but without any weakness the front free endpaper however is partially loose and may soon become completely so an armorial bookplate on the front endpaper contemporary panelled calf scuffed age-toned and worn at the corners neatly rebacked with a new calf spine a calligraphic paper title label. Blanche Henrey 323. John Ray FRS 1627 - 1705 was a Christian English naturalist widely regarded as one of the earliest of the English parson-naturalists.His classification of plants in his earlier Historia Plantarum was an important step towards modern taxonomy. Ray rejected the system of dichotomous division by which species were classified according to a pre-conceived either/or type system and instead classified plants according to similarities and differences that emerged from observation. He was among the first to attempt a biological definition for the concept of species as "a group of morphologically similar organisms arising from a common ancestor". Another significant contribution to taxonomy was his division of plants into those with two seedling leaves dicotyledons or only one monocotyledons a division used in taxonomy today. "In the Synopsis apart from the Linnean nomenclature we have a modern hand-book. The survey of species is remarkably accurate at least in flowering plants. The country has been adequately explored. The names and brief descriptions make identification easy. The classification if not scientifically perfect follows a natural sequence and is as easy to use as the modern scheme. British botany has been given a secure and intelligible foundation" - John Raven. Full Leather. Very Good. Gulielmi & Joannis Innys Hardcover‎

Recent brown morocco leather in period style lettered in gilt on the upper cover 12mo 7.5 x 4.75 inches; 187 x 118 mm. This work is divided into five parts: I. De Methodi Origine & Progressu; II. De Notis Generum characteristicis; III. De Methodo sua in Specie; IV: De Notis quas reprobat & rejiciendas censet D. Tournefort; V. De Methodo Tournefortiana. According to Geoffrey Keynes in The Bibliography of John Ray p. 129: this work is a "continuation of the discussion began in the preface to the Stirpium Europaerum Sylloge 1694 and in the appendix to the second edition of the Synopsis Methodica Stirpium Britannicarum 1696. It was largely an answer to the criticism of Tournefort who received a copy in June 1697 and published a reply De Optime methodo instituenda in re herbaria in the same year." Geoffrey Keynes states that this work in uncommon; he was only able to record eight copies two of which are in the British Museum. No ownership marks and few signs of use.
