(Firenze) L'Italia forestale e montana,1953, 8vo stralcio con copertina posticcia muta, pp. 171/181 con 7 illustrazioni e 4 tavole fotografiche. - !! - !! ATTENTION !!: : NOT A BOOK : “extract” or “excerpt” means simply a few pages, original nonetheless, printed in a magazine. Pages are indicated as in "from” “to", for example: 229/231 means the text comprises three pages (229, 230 and 231). If the magazine that contained the pages is not mentioned, it is because it is unknown to us.

SWEERT EMMANUEL
Florilegium...tractans de variis floribus et aliis indicis plantis as vivum delineatum in duabus partis et quatuor linguis concinnatum
2 parti in un volume, in folio (mm 397x255). Frontespizio calcografico con figure allegoriche, seconda parte con titolo separato e vignetta editoriale silografica. Ritratto dell'autore mancante in antiporta, 110 raffinate tavole a piena pagina, incise finemente in rame.
Sguardie rinnovate. Scomparto superiore del dorso e cuffia inferiore reintegrate.
Nissen BBI 1920; Hunt 196; Pritzel 9073.

2 parts in one volume in 2° (mm 395 x 255). Engraved allegorical title. Second part with separate titlepage with wood-vignette. Figured frontespiece with engraved portrait of the author missing, 110 wonderful engraved plates of flowers. Good copy anyway as with margins of allegorical title very lightly soiled, small tears in lower margin of title repaired, plates 9-11 and 61-64 with ink spots on inner margin, brown stain on plate 25 of the second part, new endpapers, upper and lower spine-ends renewed. Late 17th-century calf gilt, sides with wavy, small roll-tool outer border, spine with ribs decorated gilt, red morocco lettering-piece.
First edition of both parts I and II. Very Rare. Emanuel Sweet, a Dutch florist and prefect of gardens for Emperor Rudolf II, issued the Florilegium in 1612. It was essentially an unpriced sale catalogue, in Latin, Dutch, German and French of Sweert's stock available for sale at the Frankfurt Fair. Over 560 different flowers are shown on the 110 plates, generally grouped by species and with a brief explanatory note for each one. Sweert copied the engravings from De Bry's Florilegium of 1611, which was itself partially based on a 1608 work by Pierre Vallet. A white iris was even named for him (the Iris Sweertii). The work is divided into two parts: the first deals with bulbous species, and the second with species having "fibrous" roots (hellebores, canna, lily of the valley, chrysthanthemums, and many others) and a number of "beautiful" and "fragrant" trees such as myrtle, arbor vitae, and juniper. The work was very popular, leading to 6 editions being published (one in Frankfurt, the others in Amsterdam) between 1612 and 1647. Nissen BBI 1920; Hunt 196.
Accessit Bibliotheca botanica Jo. Ant. Bumaldi [...].
4to, 25cm. Pp. 16,450,66, indices. Old plain grey boards, backstrip covered later with marbled paper, printed title label. Partly rather (but evenly) browned, waterstain through upper margins, locally extending into text but mostly less visible, good otherwise. - Jean François Séguier (1703-1784) was a French botanist, historian, bibliographer and archeologist who had, i.a., studied botany with Antoine de Jussieu at Paris, and traveled extensively in Europe. The present work is the very rare first edition (a reissue was made by Haak in Leiden in 1760) of one of the earliest and best comprehensive botanical bibliographies. "The coverage of the book is excellent, due to the fact that Séguier saw an unusual number of libraries on his European tour. He furthermore consulted as many catalogues of private libraries as possible. With the major Paris and London libraries accounted for, with the information obtained from Gronovius in Holland, and with his careful scanning of the liter-ature, Séguier achieved a very high degree of coverage." (Stafleu & Cowan). - The affixed bibliography by Bumaldus (pseudonym and anagram of Ovidius Montalbanus (1601-1671), professor at Bologna) is a reissue of the original edition of 1657. "Bumaldus' Bibliotheca botanica was undoubtedly a significant bibliographical effort from which his most important followers, Séguier and Haller, derived much bene-fits." Its bibliographical list concerns books dealing with grasses, with indication of the described or depicted species, and thus it is, probably, the the first published agrostological bibliography. Both works are descibed and discussed at length in Stafleu & Cowan's 'Taxonomic literature', under nr. 11.624 (vol. 5, pp. 485-488).
