This part on Burseraceae the family of frankincense and myrrh trees Boswellia and Commiphora represent decades of study by the author who drew almost every one of the numerous botanical illustrations. Reviewed by Doug Daly of the New York Botanic Garden and noted Burseraceae specialist and designed and edited by Yvette Harvey of the RHS Wisley this is an authoritative definitive work covering numerous socio-economically important species in six genera. In the subsahelian woodlands of the North are two species of Boswellia and three of Commiphora while in the forests of the south Canarium is valued for its fruit and illumination powers. Aucoumea a monotypic species with winged seeds just creeps into Cameroon from Gabon where it is the number one timber species. Santiria trees are indicators of cloud forest distinctive for their laterally flattened root-buttresses and resinous scent. But the most diverse genus is Dacryodes with ten species in Cameroon where it is well-known for the indigenous and much cultivated "safou" or "plum" tree D. edulis highly appreciated for its steamed resinous-fleshed fruits commonly seen in the forest zone of Central Africa. Many of the others species crop wild relatives also have edible fruits but some are rare and threatened by habitat clearance. The volume written in French presents keys to the species typification detailed notes on conservation and local names and uses cites specimens extensively and has a detailed biography. First Edition.
