Reliures uniformes de l'époque de pleine basane marbrée blonde, plats jansénistes, dos à nerfs ornés de doubles caissons dorés, filets verticaux en pointillés dorés, fleurons dorés, semis de pointillés et de petits fleurons dorés, pièce de titre de maroquin blonde, titre doré, tomaison dorée, palette dorée en queue, filet doré sur les coupes, tranches rouges.‎ ‎Ensemble complet des trois volumes le constituant. Rahir indique que ''Les Etudes de la Nature avaient commencé à paraître dès 1786 mais que les éditions suivantes contiennent des chapitres nouveaux. C'est dans celle de 1788 que parût pour la première fois le roman de Paul et Virginie''. L'iconographie se compose d'un frontispice gravé en tête du premier volume d'après Jean-Michel Moreau le Jeune, ainsi que de 5 jolies planches dépliantes gravées. ''Saint-Pierre fut nommé par Louis XVI intendant du Jardin royal et du cabinet d'histoire naturelle du Roi, en place de Buffon. Il méditait depuis longtemps le plan de cet ouvrage. Il racontera plus tard lui-même dans Les Voeux d'un solitaire quelles difficultés il eut à surmonter pour trouver un imprimeur qui voulut se charger de l'impression. La chose était d'autan moins facile que cette impression exigeait des avances considérables, dont l'auteur ne pouvait faire qu'une faible partie. ''Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, le créateur de Paul et Virginie, est surtout l’auteur d’une apologétique, les Études de la nature (et les Harmonies de la nature). Ces œuvres, imprégnées du climat intellectuel d’une époque où la métaphysique chrétienne est confrontée à l’intérêt des Cartésiens et des Encyclopédistes pour la physique, sont une affirmation de la parole comme signe d’humanité. '' (Gabriel R. Thibault). Quant au roman Paul et Virginie, il met en scène les deux protagonistes éponymes et ssus de deux familles différentes. Mais pourtant élevés en commun - comme un frère et une sœur - sur fond de splendeur naturelle des paysages tropicaux de lîle Maurice. Mais à l'adolescence, des sentiments amoureux naissent entre les deux personnages. La mère de Virginie, Madame de la Tour décide alors de l'éloigner de Paul en envoyant sa fille étudier en France, laissant Paul à son chagrin. Plusieurs années après, Virginie annonce son retour sur l'île, mais le navire qui la ramène de France est pris dans une tempête... Appartenant au registre pathétique, Paul et Virginie décrit avec force les sentiments amoureux et la nostalgie du paradis perdu. Au-delà du cadre exotique et de la description d'une société idyllique, Bernardin de Saint-Pierre expose dans ce roman sa vision pessimiste de l'existence. Escher in den Alpen, über die Gemsjagd, die Landschaft Davos v. Von Salis oder ein Beitrag zur Naturgeschichte des Lämmergeiers. Im Jahre 1821 hat Steinmüller nochmals einen Versuch gestartet, mit der ‘Neuen Alpina’ sein Publikum zu begeistern. Im Verzeichnis v. Dreyer der Bibl. des deutschen Alpenklubs wird dieser Neuversuch aus dem Jahre 1821 mit der Notiz ‘Mehr nicht erschienen’ versehen, dies stimmt allerdings nicht. Im Jahre 1827 kam nämlich noch ein 2. Band dieser Neuen Alpina heraus, nachher war’s dann wohl endgültig aus für die ‘Alpina’. Die gefaltete Karte in Bd. 4 zeigt die sehr schöne grossformatige ‘Petrographische Karte von demjenigen Theil von Tyrol und Schwaben, welcher Berg-Commissair von Lupin im Sommer 1805 bereist hat’. Leider wurde die 2. Karte ‘eine im Sommer 1806 von Rösch trigonometrisch aufgenommene Karte des nördlichsten Teils des ‘Cantons Graubündten oder das Thal von St. Lucien Steig bis Chur’ nicht eingebunden. Vereinzelt etwas stockfleckig, jedoch insgesamt ein schönes Exemplar in einfachen Pappbden d.
