The binding is signed on front free endpaper verso. The publisher's catalogue sometimes found at end has not been bound with this copy. The first printing of the first edition was in Vol. IX of the Journal of the Linnean Society of London (dated 1867 but issued in 1865). With 32pp publisher's catalogue (dated January 1882) bound in at end. The woodcut illustrations are by George Darwin, the author's son. The first printing of the first edition was in Vol. IX of the Journal of the Linnean Society of London (dated 1867 but issued in 1865). The second edition, the first in book form (greatly revised and enlarged) was published in 1875 with a second 'Thousand' (actually only 500 copies) in the following year. The present edition is the first to carry the author's appendix to the Preface, and a five-line list of errata on last leaf of Contents. Since these refer to author's errors rather than to literals and remain uncorrected through subsequent reprintings from stereos, this represents the final text of the work. Traduzione dall'originale inglese di G.G. medico di Milano.<BR>8°, pp.XV (1) 325 (3), cop. muta coeva. In barbe. Lievi fioriture. Si tratta della traduzione italiana della seconda parte del poema di Erasmus Darwin "The Botanic Garden" (Londra, 1781), sulla fecondazione delle piante. Nelle pp.195-317, ampie annotazioni dell'Aut. sulla fecondazione delle piante e la fisiologia vegetale in genere, e acclarante le molte ellittiche allusioni contenute nel poema e al termini gli indici delle materie e delle piante citate nel testo. Erasmus Darwin (1731 - 1802), nonno del più celebre Charles Darwin, fu medico, naturalista e poeta. L'op. che l'ha reso celebre è la "Zoonomia" (1794), un trattato di fisiologia e psicologia umana ed animale, nel quale trapela per la prima volta nella storia un abbozzo delle teorie evoluzionistiche, sviluppate poi dal nipote. A lui si deve l'invenzione del pozzo artesiano. Sostenitore delle rivoluzioni francese e ameri-cana, fu a favore dell'abolizione della schiavitù.
