Paolo Treves: nato a Milano il 27 luglio 1908, Paolo Treves, figlio di Claudio, compì gli studi universitari a Torino ed a Milano, laureandosi in Giurisprudenza e in Scienze politiche. Intraprese la sua attività politica come segretario e collaboratore di Filippo Turati nella redazione della "Giustizia" nel 1925, a cui seguì la militanza, dal 1926 al 1938, nel Partito socialista clandestino ed il lavoro come corrispondente dall'Italia de "La Libertà" di Parigi. Vigilato speciale dal 1926 al 1932, venne arrestato e imprigionato prima nel 1929, poi nel 1935. Costretto a rifugiarsi in Inghilterra, nel 1938, continuò comunque, durante l'emigrazione, la sua lotta politica attraverso scritti, discorsi e attività radiofonica. Dal 1940 al 1945 diresse la rubrica "Sul fronte e dietro il fronte italiano" della BBC, un'antologia dei testi della quale venne poi pubblicata in volume (1945). Risale sempre al periodo londinese la sua opera politica più significativa What Mussolini did to Us (1940), alla quale seguì Italy (1942).Tornato in Italia nel gennaio 1945, per breve tempo diresse il giornale-radio e riprese la collaborazione con l'"Avanti!" e con altri giornali socialisti. Roger Penrose raccoglie la sfida di Einstein: l'esigenza di una nuova fisica, che tenga conto sia della teoria del molto "grande" (relatività generale e cosmologia) sia della teoria del molto "piccolo" (fisica dei quanti), e che possa gettare luce sui problemi aperti della biologia e della psicologia. La presente edizione include due nuove appendici dedicate rispettivamente a una versione particolarmente facile del teorema di Gödel e alla descrizione di un esperimento atto a controllare le nuove idee di Penrose sulla meccanica quantistica. Roger Penrose, vincitore del premio Nobel per la Fisica 2020, è professore emerito di Matematica all'Università di Oxford.

Vivara. Storia e insediamenti archeologici
ill., br. Le tracce più antiche di insediamenti sull'isola di Procida, riferibili all'età del Bronzo, sono state rinvenute a Vivara. Le ricerche archeologiche hanno dimostrato che l'isola di Vivara era abitata fin dal XVII secolo a.C. e che rappresentava un crocevia strategico nei traffici marittimi che collegavano la Grecia dell'età micenea con l'Occidente. A seguito dei navigli provenienti dall'Egeo giungevano fino all'originario porto-approdo vivarese, oggi sommerso a una profondità di circa 14 metri sotto il livello del mare, grandi vasi da trasporto, raffinate coppe, tazzette dipinte e piccoli vasi contenenti oli profumati o altri tipi di unguenti. Questi ritrovamenti attestano l'esistenza di scambi commerciali tra gli abitanti del comprensorio di Procida-Vivara e le più antiche marinerie mediterranee fra la metà del XVII e il XV secolo a.C. L'autrice ci guida in un'affascinante visita di Vivara, attraverso un sapiente excursus sulla storia dell'isola e sul progetto di studio a essa dedicato, che mette in evidenza l'identità del luogo e condensa in un'unica mappa le eccezionali testimonianze del passato e gli aspetti più suggestivi della natura.
